Woman's Bible: A Classic Feminist Perspective
Woman's Bible: A Classic Feminist Perspective | Elizabeth Cady Stanton
8 posts | 11 read | 23 to read
Book-by-book examination of the Bible by pioneer in women's rights movement places events in their historical context, interprets passages as both allegory and fact, and compares them with myths of other cultures. In the tradition of radical individualism, Stanton's attack on religious orthodoxy represents a political treatise rather than a scholarly work.

#JubilantJuly Day 26 - Controversial

Published in 1898, this is a groundbreaking feminist text. Suffragette and women's rights activist Elizabeth Cady Stanton presents an interpretation of the Christian bible that challenges the underlying belief that women should be subservient to men. It was so controversial that many of her fellow activists denounced it publicly.

8leagueboot How have I never heard of this? She was truly a revolutionary. 7y
minkyb New to me too. Have to fix that! 7y

Spent the day in Seneca falls yesterday. Wishing I had done it sooner.

Lacythebookworm I was there for the 150th anniversary of the first women's rights convention many years ago. It was a great experience! 7y

Pickpick

Unbelievably progressive for its time, and still somewhat progressive now, THE WOMEN'S BIBLE is a masterpiece. The author offers an educated, rational, feminist critique of Abrahamic patriarchal traditions, and especially the books of the Christian bible. Her takedowns are full of 19th century snark and shade, while being grounded in research, information, and logic. The author was trying to move the women's mvmt beyond suffrage.
