The Illusionist's Apprentice
The Illusionist's Apprentice | Kristy Cambron
Harry Houdnis one-time apprentice holds fantastic secrets about the greatest illusionist in the world. But someone wants to claim them . . . or silence her before she can reveal them on her own. Boston, 1926. Jenny Wren Lockhart is a bold eccentriceven for a female vaudevillian. As notorious for her inherited wealth and gentlemans dress as she is for her unsavory upbringing in the back halls of a vaudeville theater, Wren lives in a world that challenges all manner of conventions. In the months following Houdinis death, Wren is drawn into a web of mystery surrounding a spiritualist by the name of Horace Stapleton, a man defamed by Houdinis ardent debunking of fraudulent mystics in the years leading up to his death. But in a public illusion that goes terribly wrong, one man is dead and another stands charged with his murder. Though hes known as one of her teachers greatest critics, Wren must decide to become the one thing she never wanted to be: Stapletons defender. Forced to team up with the newly formed FBI, Wren races against time and an unknown enemy, all to prove the innocence of a hated man. In a world of illusion, of the vaudeville halls that showcase the flamboyant and the strange, Wrens carefully constructed world threatens to collapse around her. Layered with mystery, illusion, and the artistry of the Jazz Ages bygone vaudeville era, The Illusionists Apprentice is a journey through love and loss and the underpinnings of faith on each lifes stage.

I have no self-control when it comes to library books! This is today's #libraryhaul, although I wasn't intending to get any books for myself, just some for my kids. Thanks, @thereadingowlvina, for the suggestion of Kristy Cambron. I was excited to find one of her books on my library's shelf!

This book is on sale! I'm getting it! If you like historical fiction, you might enjoy this. I've not read this book, but I read The Ringmaster's Wife and The Lost Castle. Cambron writes beautifully through her evocative & descriptive writing.

This book was between a pick and a so-so for me. I enjoyed the story, but it wasn‘t my favorite. Set in the 1920s an Illusionist helps the FBI solve a crime. There‘s a mystery and a love story and a sordid past. I would give this a 3.5🌟 out of 5.

This was just not for me. The narrative style was a bit clunky at times, too (As muscles go, Wren's took on a life of their own, tensing in reaction., p141) and the characters thin. The religiosity in the book pretty minimal which was actually a lost opportunity, I thought, because how Wren's faith impacted her desire to debunk spiritualists would have made her and the story more interesting.

As the former apprentice of the renowned Harry Houdini, Wren Lockhart skillfully manages the art of illusion, both on stage and in her life. When she must become involved in an illusion-gone-wrong investigation, she proves to be a wonderfully complex and purposefully guarded character—the more I discovered about her, the more I enjoyed her as a character. (I received a free copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.) #AprilAmazingReads

For no demonstrable reason, our heroine is the key to everything. #ohbrother

How far do you read before you DNF? I'm 14% in and haaaaaaaaating this book. What's a fair shake?

BookInMyHands 50 pages unless you are over 50. If you are over 50, subtract 1 pages for every year over 50. Life is short and there are too many good books. This is what the librarian Nancy Pearl says and I think she is quite wise. 7y
BookInMyHands Also, this in no way is a comment on your age, I'm just giving Nancy's full explanation. 😁 7y
unabridgedchick @BookInMyHands I love that!!!!! It's a fab suggestion and am totally implementing. Also, no worries re: age; I didn't read the comment that way! 7y

B.Reader If I am not enjoying I DNF then. I read for pleasure and if it isn't pleasurable, I think it isn't the right book at the right time. 😊 7y
Melissa_J Depends on book length in general. I usually try about 50 pages for shorter books, and 100 pages for longer ones. I've been known to DNF 3/4 of the way through books though. 7y
moranadatter It depends on why I am reading. If I'm reading for pleasure, I stop as soon as it isn't working. If it's for a book club 10 - 20% feels fair. 7y

Today's #womenshistoryreads rec is the brand-new novel THE ILLUSIONIST'S APPRENTICE, with one of my favorite main characters in recent memory, Wren Lockhart. @kristycambron took inspiration from Houdini's real-life 17-year-old apprentice Dorothy Young and spun a great adventure in Jazz Age Boston, for her characters & for you. #womenshistorymonth

One of the best feelings in the world of authordom: when you forget you're reading a book because you've been asked to blurb it and you just devour it to find out what happens. This was sooo good.
