Fragments
Fragments: Poems, Intimate Notes, Letters | Marilyn Monroe
15 posts | 16 read | 9 to read
Fragments is an event--an unforgettable book that will redefine one of the greatest icons of the twentieth century and that, nearly fifty years after her death, will definitively reveal Marilyn Monroe's humanity. Marilyn's image is so universal that we can't help but believe we know all there is to know of her. Every word and gesture made headlines and garnered controversy. Her serious gifts as an actor were sometimes eclipsed by her notoriety--and by the way the camera fell helplessly in love with her. Beyond the headlines--and the too-familiar stories of heartbreak and desolation--was a woman far more curious, searching, witty, and hopeful than the one the world got to know. Now, for the first time, readers can meet the private Marilyn and understand her in a way we never have before. Fragments is an unprecedented collection of written artifacts--notes to herself, letters, even poems--in Marilyn's own handwriting, never before published, along with rarely seen intimate photos. Jotted in notebooks, typed on paper, or written on hotel letterhead, these texts reveal a woman who loved deeply and strove to perfect her craft. They show a Marilyn Monroe unsparing in her analysis of her own life, but also playful, funny, and impossibly charming. The easy grace and deceptive lightness that made her performances indelible emerge on the page, as does the simmering tragedy that made her last appearances so affecting.

Marilyn is peeled back in her memoir and notebooks.
I will always come back to these two books,
Touching and raw

Always been a fan of Marilyn Monroe, and her "fragments" book just made me love her even more. Her personal poetry and notes truly showed how fragile she was, and I loved this in depth look into her character.

This book is also full of photographs, not of her as the nation's sex symbol, but her reading, laughing with friends, and studying notes/scripts.

"Fragments" brought Marilyn to life yet again.

brit91 I love her!!💖💖 5y

“...but I‘m really too tired for it.”

I have read this over and over. Marilyn was so much more than a starlet.

Inspired to look this up by Maria Papova's brainpickings, I'm glad I did! Fragments is a collection of notes, letters, and poems in Marilyn's own hand as well as photographs that allow us a glimpse of the real Marilyn Monroe. "This book does not attempt to show her stripped bare but, rather, simply as she was." -from editor's note. There is such a disconnect between the public figure and the vulnerable private person.

I know, I know! Kind of obvious. Clearly I have limited imagination- but in checking this out, this book of poems, notes and letters looks fascinating! I think I may have to order this one. #characters2017 #blondebombshell

I read nine books this month, which is pretty average for me. The month started off slow, though, due to being so busy at work. Omens and Cannibalism are still in progress, but I'm hoping to finish both of them by the end of the day!

I'm a huge Marilyn fan, and this has been such an interesting book. I only wish I had a physical copy to read, because the format on my library ebook is really odd.

You know that question about famous people, living or dead, you'd like to invite to a dinner party? Norma Jean is always on my list, not because she became a glamorous film icon but because I suspect she was very kind, very smart and at heart a bookish introvert. I love this volume, it is as close as we will ever get to understanding her inner life & heart. #Booktober
