The Heart: Frida Kahlo in Paris
The Heart: Frida Kahlo in Paris | Marc Petitjean
9 posts | 6 read | 9 to read
This intimate account offers a new, unexpected understanding of the artist's work and of the vibrant Surrealist art scene in the 1930s. In 1939, devastated after the revelation that her husband had had an affair with her sister, Frida Kahlo left her home in Mexico and headed for Paris to rebuild her life and rediscover her art. Now, for the first time, this missing part of Kahlo's story is brought to light in exquisite detail. Marc Petitjean takes the reader to Paris with Kahlo, where she spends her time alongside luminaries such as Pablo Picasso, Andr Breton, Dora Maar, and Marcel Duchamp. Using Kahlo's whirlwind romance with the author's father, Michel Petitjean, as a jumping-off point, The Heart provides a striking portrait of the artist as she learns how to love--and ultimately how to paint--again.

Continuing with my stack of Frida books, The Heart is about Frida‘s short time in Paris in early 1939 and her romance with Michel Petitjean. They moved in the same circles and began a brief but passionate affair. Upon her departure, Frida gifted Michel one of her now most famous paintings, The Heart. The book is written by Michel‘s son and covers a brief but important time in Frida‘s life. Highly recommend for fans of Frida. 4⭐️

Marc Petitjean separates fact from family legend in his biography about Kahlo and his father. He explores the veracity of the family stories about his father‘s affair with Kahlo in 1939. She gave the elder Petitjean, Michel, a painting she titled The Heart as a parting gift. It‘s also part pre-WWII history and art history.

Written by the son of one of Frida‘s lovers, while in Paris. We learn of how as an adult, Marc Peitjean, learns that his father and Frida had an affair during her ti@e in Paris. Petitjean learns much more about Frida‘s time there and of the painting she gave his father, The Heart. Fascinating history of a much beloved painter‘s time in Paris before WWII with the surrealists.

athorne I just spent time reading an excerpt about this and now I must know more. 4y

The best parts of this book are when Frida is just done with people.
