253: The Print Remix | Geoff Ryman
6 posts | 2 read | 10 to read
A Bakerline tube carriage has 36 seats. An ideally filled tube train with no-one standing would carry 252 passengers. The driver makes 253. Each has their own personal history, their own thoughts about themselves and their fellow passengers.

Mehso-so

How I‘ve come to this book ranking is a confusing one. Because on one hand I really like the idea of the book, it‘s a unique and never been done before style of writing. Each page is dedicated to a character on a train. Unique = Good thing. But in order for this to be successful, I think it needed to be written by an entirely different person. Because the Pro Thatcher vibes & misleading info on autism is really quite problematic

Never have I ever been more p*ssed off by a paragraph in a fictional book. I‘m autistic and this has got me fuming. Like what is even the point in writing this. But at the same time what can I expect from a book which seems rather Pro Thatcher 🤦🏼‍♀️

Megabooks This is terrible!! Holy inaccuracies Batman! Wow! 3y
Lissy1 @Megabooks this book is about people on the London Underground. So each page is related to a fictional character. And whilst the author does state that not all information within the book is correct, I don‘t think autism is something to give incorrect information. Especially when their are already so many misconceptions about it. This book was written in the late 90s though so perhaps that‘s what people believed at the time 🤷‍♀️ 3y

Initially published as an interactive online novel, "253" documents all 253 passengers (& driver) of a tube train. Each character receives one page & several characters are connected. I haven't read this yet & am hoping it is more than a mere gimmick.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk I usually love the concept of things like this rather than the execution. Still, I'm intrigued. 7y
vivastory @TobeyTheScavengerMonk If I remember correctly, Jeff Vandermeer praised it. 7y
DeborahSmall His novel Was.. is an all time favourite, @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I'm sure Jonathan Carroll recommended it. 7y
vivastory @DeborahSmall "Was" sounds intriguing. Definitely adding to tbr. Thanks! 7y
