Hereville: How Mirka Got Her Sword
Hereville: How Mirka Got Her Sword | Barry Deutsch
14 posts | 19 read | 18 to read
Spunky, strong-willed eleven-year-old Mirka Herschberg isn t interested in knitting lessons from her stepmother, or how-to-find-a-husband advice from her sister, or you-better-not warnings from her brother. There s only one thing she "does "want: to fight dragons! Granted, no dragons have been breathing fire around Hereville, the Orthodox Jewish community where Mirka lives, but that doesn t stop the plucky girl from honing her skills. She fearlessly stands up to local bullies. She battles a very large, very menacing pig. And she boldly accepts a challenge from a mysterious witch, a challenge that could bring Mirka her heart s desire: a dragon-slaying sword! All she has to do is find and outwit the giant troll who s got it! A delightful mix of fantasy, adventure, cultural traditions, and preteen commotion, "Hereville "will captivate middle-school readers with its exciting visuals and entertaining new heroine. I‘ve been hearing about this series for years and was drawn to the concept, so I‘m glad I finally got around to reading the first one, but I‘m not inclined to continue. Honestly I‘m a bit unclear on what the message is re rebelling against vs accepting traditional roles in this community. I‘d be interested to know the typical demographics of the readership of this series. 👇🏼

IndoorDame I could see it being deeply meaningful to girls like the main character, but this book is HIGHLY unlikely to get into their hands. It could be read by young Modern Orthodox girls and might be meaningful to them, so that‘s probably who I‘d recommend it to. 4mo

I love this book!!! It is my go to airplane read for it‘s simplicity and easy to read style. Also, you can interpret it a little different every time! Did I mention it‘s funny? Read the excerpt above :)

I‘m working in our summer camp‘s library/ sensory room this summer (it‘s kinda my dream job). I read this book between visits from kids. Mirka lives in an Orthodox Jewish community. She dreams of fighting dragons. In pursuit of her goals, she pushes boundaries and rebels against rules, but also draws strength from her upbringing.

wanderinglynn That does sound like a fun job! 3y

This middle grade graphic novel about an Orthodox Jewish girl looking to Slaughter nearby evil fantasy creatures is unique and delightful and so much fun. The ending was especially fun. Definitely recommending this to everyone I know. I look forward to reading more from the series.

Mirka is 11 and living in Hereville, a community of Orthodox Jews, but she longs for dragon-slaying adventures.
When she annoys the witch‘s talking pig her plan for adventure comes true, but it turns out the skills she needs are the ones her clever stepmother has been trying to teach her the whole time.

Clwojick I almost read this one, but my Libby time ran out and it was auto-returned! I'll have to check it out again. Glad you posted this, as I haven't heard much about it yet. 👏👏❤️ 6y
BookInMyHands @Clwojick Deutsch is a somewhat local author and I heard him present at a conference a few years ago. He walked us through the process of creating a graphic novel and it was fascinating. 6y

I can relate! 😁
From Hereville: How Mirka Met A Meteorite, but that's not in the Litsy database. So tagged the first book instead.

A delightful graphic novel full of humour, adventure, and unexpected characters. Mirka is a great protagonist, and I love how she defies gender expectations but the book also values work associated with women (one battle involves knitting!). It takes place in a kind of fairy tale land out of time but is also rooted in an Orthodox Jewish community. So it's a fun intro for Gentile kids and awesome representation for Jewish kids. #WeNeedDiverseBooks

My Christmas vacation starts now! And of course that means hanging out with my Dad's cat Trixie and a big to-read pile. I'm gonna finish Dumplin' and Labyrinth Lost today, which one should I read next? #CatsofLitsy

Nutmegnc I also vote for fifth season! And new "of fire and stars" with 2 princesses fall in love! Not a spoiler, it's in the book summary. She's a new author. The book is not amazing but it is entertaining and -- two princesses! 7y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @Nutmegnc Oh yes, OF FIRE AND STARS is definitely on my to-read list. It looks lovely. 7y

A neat page from a new graphic novel I'm reading. To be honest, I wasn't sold on it until this moment.
