I love this series. This is the 12th installment which follows Chief Kate Burkholder as she inadvertently becomes involved with a case of corruption in a neighboring department. I loved the more procedural-heavy tone of this story and the way Kate‘s beginnings with the police force were told. It gives more insight into why she is the way she is.

I also love the way the cold, snowy weather played into the story, since it‘s so hot where I am.

Finished book 2 for #rushathon. I wasn‘t as crazy about this one as I have for the others in this series. I felt like it was a slower burn. Still a good series!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️

robinb I keep meaning to get back to this series! I really enjoyed the first book but keep forgetting to get back to Kate. 🙄🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y

An easy read. Seems as though the author thought of some excellent cop names then overused them at nauseam (Tomasetti). Author also led you to believe there was going to be some serious double crossing, but then didn‘t tie up that end nicely? Or at all. Liked the insight into Amish life.

I really enjoy this series a great deal, and the latest installment is quite good. The MC of the series, Kate Burkholder, grew up Amish & left the faith, becoming a police officer & eventually returning to her home town to become the police chief, where she is somewhat able to bridge the cultural gap between the Amish & English. I love the way Castillo handles her portrayal of the Amish community as people (not idealized or demonized) with their⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) own strengths & weaknesses. While Kate doesn't regret leaving the Amish way, adulthood has allowed her to recognize that their are aspects of the religion & community aren't objectively wrong just because they are wrong for her.

Anyway, this book itself was more of a thriller than a mystery (most of the books in the series have been typical murder mysteries) & I was on the edge of my seat. Most of the chapters are Kate's 1st person but ⬇ 5y

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Castillo sprinkled in some 3rd person chapters so the reader could see the danger coming!!!

Part of my enjoyment of this series is that they are set here in Ohio only about an hour from where I live. In this one, part of the action takes place in Columbus (nearest city to here) & it's always fun with geographic details match up to reality!!

Definitely recommend these - I'll tag the first book as they should be read in order.

TheAromaofBooks @Nute - I really appreciate the way Castillo, via Kate, acknowledges that while some aspects of the Amish community can be harsh/judgmental, it's balanced by unity & a genuine belief in helping one's neighbors, and that there is also an entire range of liberal/conservative just within the Amish sects. While the series has some ups & downs, I've found them to be quite readable - hope you enjoy them!! 5y

I can't handle reading books out of order, so I always try to help people start at the beginning! 😂 These probably could be read as stand-alones, but if you read them in order you get so much more of Kate's backstory and understand how and why she left the Amish & also why she eventually came back to her hometown. 5y

#WeeklyForecast - Well, it's almost the end of the month, so time to try to jam in all the books I "need" to read!! Started the tagged book last night - really, the Kate Burkholder books should definitely be on the #20series20days list that I haven't kept up on posting haha this is the newest one, and is due back at the library right away. I really love this series, set only an hour or so from where I live.

Partners in Crime is July's #AgathaChristieClubR2 book, but I just got my copy this week, so that's my excuse!

Pride & Prejudice and Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat are current reads. I'm finding SFAC to be absolutely brilliantly fascinating - it's a library book but I will definitely be getting my own copy.

The rest are all random TBR books - I'll see how far I get! 5y

Castillo always presents characters that the reader comes to genuinely care about. In this, the 12th, book in the series, we are introduced to Amish farmer Adam, a widower, with three small children. This family reflected the teachings of the Amish with their innocence and compassion for their fellow humankind. My heart ached for them when their act of kindness inadvertently puts them in danger.

I always eagerly await the next installment of the Kate Burkholder series! This one gives some more background on Kate‘s character when an old friend unexpectedly escapes to Painters Mill in dire need of help. Both new and familiar faces feel realistic and with a fast pace, this was a hard one to put down! I already can‘t wait to see what happens next! Happy Fourth of July!! #NetGalley
