The Breadwinner brings to life an issue that has recently exploded in the international media -- the reality of life under the Taliban. Young Parvana lives with her family in one room of a bombed-out apartment building in Kabul, Afghanistan. Because he has a foreign education, her father is arrested by the Taliban, the religious group that controls the country. Since women cannot appear in public unless covered head to toe, or go to school, or work outside the home, the family becomes increasingly desperate until Parvana conceives a plan. She cuts her hair and disguises herself as a boy to earn money for her family. Parvana's determination to survive is the force that drives this novel set against the backdrop of an intolerable situation brought about by war and religious fanaticism.Deborah Ellis spent several months talking with women and girls in Afghan refugee camps in Pakistan and Russia. This suspenseful, timely novel is the result of those encounters.

This was a super read, really emotive and impacting... such a good choice for young readers- encourages them to see beyond their own lives and circumstances and helps them appreciate some of our basic civil liberties that are denied to others in certain parts of the world. 💔🌍

tokorowilliamwallace Yes, I was always so impressed with all the little local Middle Eastern cuisine pop-ups, food trucks, and restaurants in nearly every town in Maryland. Quality food for an adventurous day exploring and traveling around. 2y

Heartbreaking. Also, how does this happen? It does not seem functional or sustainable. #foodandlit #afghanistan

Texreader The stories from Afghanistan are heartbreaking and so sad to know they‘re true 2y

1.The tagged is an ebook from the library, I‘m also reading a physical book and listening to an audiobook. It all depends on my space and time.
2. The tagged book is incredible but sad.
3. I only mark my LMPBC at this time but I want to mark up some of my nonfiction books.

First in a 4-novel series, focuses on life under the Taliban in Kabul, ca. 2000. Parvana is 11, and she and her father go to the market daily to sell their few goods & offer reading/writing services. When Father is arrested, Parvana must masquerade as a boy to support her family. Ellis shows young readers what life for children is like in repressive, war-torn Afghanistan. https://cannonballread.com/2020/07/the-breadwinner-a-novel-elcicco/

A touching book and a good introduction into what life is like for many growing up in Afghanistan.

#ReadHarder prompt: middle grade book that doesn't take place in the US or UK.

I didn't actually realise this was a book until it said at the end of the film. However, this was a really great film, very moving and gorgeous animation. Definitely recommend this film and I'll be adding the book to the tbr.

Tanisha_A Oh I loved watching this. 💔 5y

Parvana is 11 years old and lives in Kabul. After her father is arrested, it is up to her to provide for the family. In a city where the Taliban prohibit and punish, this is no easy task.

This is a children‘s book and therefore quick to read. It shows a child who knows nothing but war, highlighting how awful it is for people in war torn countries to see this as ordinary.

Really interesting book about how hard life is under the Taliban in Afghanistan. It is a childrens‘ book, but it is one of the good ones - i.e. a great read for any age. The story is written from the viewpoint of Parvana, a young girl who has to dress up as a boy to find work. The animated version by the same name is great too - was nominated for the Oscars this year.

It makes me sad when people tell me they don't read books and seem proud of themselves. They don't realize how much they are missing out on.

This story affirms my sense that children are often stronger, braver and more resilient than the adults in their lives. Perhaps it is because she hasn't lived long enough to be lose faith, and hope is the gift of the young. Regardless, this story introduced me to a world I did not know, which the best reason to read. Thumbs up for more stories featuring young heroines. #bookbingonw2017 #booksmadeintomovies

Foreward: War is made by people living in safety who make the decision to take risks with the lives of others whose opinions on the matter are not even solicited. War is made by those who profit from the manufacturing of weaponry. War is made by people who are too lazy to put the creative work and compassion into coming up with a solution to their problems that does not involve murder. #peace
