Okay, I want to throw out a debate (because it is happening at libraries around here right now).

CDC has lifted the mask mandate if you have had a vaccine.

Should libraries go mask less now - why or why not?

LibrarianRyan Personal opinion - hell yes, still wear masks. Official Work opinion: Follow the guidelines of your community as they have an option to extend their mask mandate. Then talk to you staff to see if they are comfortable being mask less and being around mask less patrons. Plus, do you really want to be the vaccine police? How do you know someone isn't lying?

Our current work policy - masks on.

phantomx Thanks for bringing this up. Libraries should remain with the mandate of wearing masks because if librarians are not allowed to ask patrons if they have or have not been vaccinated, then for the safety of all patrons, masks should still be worn. There could be a someone who is not vaccinated and might take advantage of the current mandate. There's still issues of vaccine hesitancy, and misunderstanding of the vaccines being a “cure“ 3y
ravenlee My library lifted the mask requirement and quarantining returned items at the same time. It makes me anxious. Me personally, I say let‘s keep the masks a while yet and see how the other changes shake out. Like a chemistry experiment - you can‘t figure out what made the change if you alter more than one component at a time, right? But I‘m also not wearing one all day, so I can understand the desire to be rid of them. 3y

audraelizabeth Both the state I live in and the the state I work in(Ohio and West Virginia respectively) have lifted mask mandates starting in june (2nd and i believe 20th) many of the customers at my job are vaccinated and roughly half the staff is as well but our corporate office says we continue to wear them until told otherwise. I would be comfortable with others&myself being maskless but I understand that isnt everyone&feel it should be a personal choice. 3y
LibrarianRyan @phantomx I agree, but the number of people I am seeing who are happy for their libraries to go mask free. Mannnn. So far the “best“ excuse is their town didn't get hit very hard so it's not really necessary. It makes me want to stay as far away from that town as possiable. 3y
vivastory Absolutely not. I don't trust people to be honest about if they have had the vaccine & I think that it puts library staff in an awkward position of policing that. 3y
hissingpotatoes Our library is not requiring masks for people who are vaccinated, but we cannot ask if people have gotten the vaccine so it's basically a free-for-all “honor system“ where we have no authority at all. Other than kids under 12 who we know can't get the vaccine yet, but IMO this “honor“ system just favors those who have no honor and puts kids and people who can't get the vaccine at risk. 😡 3y
ChaoticMissAdventures My library is on curbside pick up only until June then half of the branches will open for timed browsing appointments, and a couple of other services. They have no information about if they will require mask, but I feel like they have been overly cautious, so I am hoping masks will be required. I am with others here, I do not trust the "honor system" antivaxxers are usually antimaskers and they care way more about their comfort and conspiracy theories then they do with helping to keep the community safe. So I will be continuing to mask and will leave any space that maskless people are. 3y
CBee Keep the masks. Absolutely. I‘ll be wearing mine for the foreseeable future, especially until my kids can get the vaccine! 3y
AmyG What @CBee said. Not all kids have been vaccinated and don‘t think they can‘t get Covid. I also don‘t trust people who say they are vaccinated. I will still wear mine for the foreseeable future. 3y
CBee @AmyG 👍🏻😘 3y
kezzlou85 Luckily here it's still masks on but that seems way too soon. I would still be wearing mine 3y
marleed I‘m fully vaccinated but will continue to mask in any public indoor space. I‘m no longer afraid to linger in a public space but it is the combination of my vaccine and the collective use of continued masked wearing that alleviated my fears. Indoor mask wearing is really not a big deal and helps contains whatever viral load is still out there. 3y
mrp27 I agree with your personal and professional opinions. I'm fully vaxxed and I'm anxious to ditch the mask but it won't bother me to continue wearing one for as long as necessary. 3y
TheSpineView I personally still wear a mask in closed public spaces even though I am fully vaccinated. However, I get that some people are uncomfortable wearing them or truly believe they are not necessary. So I think it should be up to the individual. I would say, "Mask recommended but not required." 3y
mandarchy Our schools and libraries are open but my son was sent home for over a week because he was exposed to a confirmed case. He can't be vaccinated yet. So if we go anywhere where masks are optional, he'll be at risk. I'm a single parent with no childcare options. I can't afford to keep him home all the time. I need to work. This is all so complicated, but we will continue to wear masks. 3y
magyklyXdelish I say keep masks. You never know who‘s going to lie and honestly I live in a small conservative town where people weren‘t wearing them even when it was mandated so I wouldn‘t trust a single living soul in this town. I‘m fully vaxxed but I‘ll keep wearing mine for a long while yet. 3y
Soubhiville I agree with @CBee and @AmyG . Wearing a mask isn‘t a big deal and I‘m going to keep wearing mine until there is more proof that the vaccines work really well. Why risk it? 3y
MamaGina I have confidence in the vaccines for myself but for now I‘ll continue to wear masks in solidarity with the children being put at risk. I‘m sorry but I don‘t trust the honor system. It is lovely being able to spend time with my parents again unmasked since as of last Friday we‘re all fully vaccinated! 🤓 3y
KathyWheeler My university is keeping its mask requirement so far, and I‘m glad of that. I don‘t think the CDC took actual behavior of people into account when making this recommendation. I foresee a bunch of people lying about this because they never wore the mask in the first place and don‘t want to be vaccinated. 3y
CBee @magyklyXdelish I live in the same kinda place 🙄 I feel you 👍🏻 3y
CBee @MamaGina such wonderful news about you and your parents ♥️ 3y
CBee @Soubhiville it isn‘t a big deal. I never got why so many people MAKE it a big deal! It‘s a piece of fabric. Oy 🤦‍♀️ 3y
LibrarianRyan @mandarchy good luck. You got this. 😁 3y
mandarchy @LibrarianRyan thanks. I think masks are the safest easiest thing we can do. 3y
S3V3N I‘m wearing mine regardless. 3y
WanderingBookaneer @BookishMarginalia and I are both vaccinated, but we feel more comfortable when everyone is wearing masks indoors.

I went to the supermarket last week and they had lifted mask restrictions for customers. There were a handful of maskless people and I felt very uncomfortable when they were near.

Samplergal Ohhhhh. I love that idea. I have one I should do later. My dogs always bark at me while I have them on. ❤️ Enjoy! 5y
