This early work by Edgar Allan Poe was originally published in 1845. Born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1809, Poe became an orphan at a very early age. After being taken in by a couple in Richmond, he spent a brief spell in the United Kingdom before returning to enrol at the University of Virginia. Poe struggled for many years to make a living as a writer and frequently had to move city to stay in employment as a critic. Even for his greatest success, 'The Raven', he only received $9 and, although becoming a household name, his financial position remained far from stable. Poe died in 1849, aged just 40, yet his legacy is a formidable one: He is seen today as one of the greatest practitioners of Gothic and detective fiction that ever lived, and popular culture is replete with references to him. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions.

It‘s time to reread this myself, since I‘m making kiddo read it for school. I‘ll never forget the teacher who assigned this in seventh grade, then told us “purloined” is a fancy style of writing.

cherinium I read the 3 Dupin detective stories within he last week, and this one was the best of the bunch. The first 2 were long winded and boring. I didn't finish either one. 7y

ravenlee Seventh grade reading enrichment class: teacher tells us “purloined” means a fancy style of writing. My mom: you‘re old enough now to know thar sometimes you‘re smarter than the teacher, and pointing it out is just going to make life harder for you. (This language arts teacher also mixed up passed/past, and otherwise tormented me for a year) So THAT was what I learned from this Poe story. 7y

ravenlee My mom is awesome! Apparently she had the same conversation with both my older siblings. After I graduated HS I was working at BN, and that same teacher came up to my register (no recognition of me, but I knew her!) and blatantly abused her educator discount. She told me the books she was buying were to encourage independent reading (romance and suspense novels!). I just shook my head. 7y

Great tour of the Edgar Allen Poe museum in Richmond. I wrote my Senior Thesis on The Purloined Letter in college.

This was a fun departure from the usual Poe story. This is considered to be one of the forerunners to modern detective novels. Being a huge fan of Sherlock, I really liked this. It may not be as involved as other detective stories, but it was enjoyable anyway. It's not your typical Poe, which may put some people off. 11/1,001 #1001Books
