Scandalous Women
Scandalous Women: The Lives and Loves of History's Most Notorious Women | Elizabeth Kerri Mahon
15 posts | 4 read | 24 to read
Throughout history women have caused wars, defied the rules, and brought men to their knees. The famous and the infamous, queens, divorces, actresses, and outlaws have created a ruckus during their lifetimes-turning heads while making waves. Scandalous Women tells the stories of the risk takers who have flouted convention, beaten the odds, and determined the course of world events. *When Cleopatra (69 BC-30 BC) wasn't bathing in asses' milk, the last pharaoh of the Ptolemaic dynasty ruled Egypt and forged an important political alliance with Rome against her enemies-until her dalliance with Marc Antony turned the empire against her. *Emilie du Chtelet (1706-1748), a mathematician, physicist, author, and paramour of one of the greatest minds in France, Voltaire, shocked society with her unorthodox lifestyle and intellectual prowess-and became a leader in the study of theoretical physics in France at a time when the sciences were ruled by men. *Long before Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus, Ida B. Wells-Barnett (1862-1928) fought to end discrimination and the terrible crime of lynching and helped found the NAACP, but became known as a difficult woman for her refusal to compromise and was largely lost in the annals of history. *Gertrude Bell (1868-1926) had a passion for archaeology and languages, and left her privileged world behind to become one of the foremost chroniclers of British imperialism in the Middle East, and one of the architects of the modern nation of Iraq.

I stopped at a brand new independent bookstore that opened last week in Omaha. The selection was small, and a little too much James Patterson for my taste, but I did manage to find one book to take home. It‘s a cute little shop & I wish them success in their venture.

Today's #womenshistoryreads is Elizabeth Kerri Mahon, talking SCANDALOUS WOMEN. Her interview is a must-read: jam-packed with names you've never heard & stories you won't forget! Greermacallister.com/blog

lynneamch From this fascinating interview: 17th c. Mademoiselle Maupin, "entered a convent as a postulant in order to pursue a young woman that she had fallen in love with. One night after an elderly nun died, Juliet stole the body, placed it in the girl‘s cell and set fire to the convent, and escaped with her lover. . . . " 6y
lynneamch " . . . They were on the run for three months and Juliet was sentenced to death in absentia by the parliament in Provence as a man, because the judges refused to believe that a woman could abduct another, let alone from a convent." Talk about an #unconventionalromance! #Booked2018 6y

It happened today: I bailed on a book intentionally. While I think Scandalous Women may be a fun airplane or by the pool read, I‘m 30 pages in and it‘s really poorly written. Kind of feels like a high schooler trying to explain these women. It‘s 2018, I don‘t have time or patience for bad books. Moving on.

Cinfhen Feels good to bail, right?!? 6y
HotMessJess @Cinfhen I was a little disappointed in myself at first, to be honest. But I started reading Man In The High Castle and within two pages I knew I made the right choice. 6y
Cinfhen I find bailing so liberating! I can always revisit at another time 😉 6y

Christine11 The idea of Scandalous Women sounded really interesting but I‘m glad you‘ve said it‘s not well written because now I won‘t waste my money on it ! So thank you 😊 6y
HotMessJess @Cinfhen I may start subscribing to the art of the bail! Like I said, I think this book is a “laying on the beach and not caring about the day” kind of book! 6y
RaimeyGallant I'm getting good at bailing. We need a prettier word for it though... ;) 6y
HotMessJess @Christine11 you could maybe still find it at a library? 6y
HotMessJess @RaimeyGallant we do!! I‘ll start thinking of names haha. 6y
Christine11 @HotMessJess That‘s true 😊 If I do see it I will give it a chance! 6y

Got sidetracked by books on Pinterest and finishing up 'The Good Girls Revolt' on Amazon Prime and also finally catching up on 'AHS Roanoke'. So here I am with 20 pages left to go still.

ApoptyGina69 I binged on AHS:Roanoke just yesterday. All the stabby, stabby was oddly cathartic and I caught myself laughing. Great cast as usual! 😳👺👹☠️ 7y

Hit the Barnes & Noble. Knocked a couple off my list and got the Man Cub one. Now I think I will read a bit before Man Cub gets here and I have to drive. Which reminds me, I need another audiobook.
