My Notorious Life
My Notorious Life | Kate Manning
'In the end, they celebrated. They bragged. They got me finally, was their feeling. They said I would take my secrets to the grave. They should be so lucky.' Defiant and daring, Axie Muldoon claws her way from the streets up to the dizzying heights of New York society. But as her fame grows and her name hits the headlines, her reputation as the most scandalous midwife of her time begins to threaten everything she holds dear. And one crusading official will not rest until he has brought about the downfall of 'Madame X'. It will take all of Axie's cunning to save both herself and those she loves from ruin...

REPollock @Cathythoughts thank you there‘s an old cemetery behind my work, and last week someone brought flowers for all the graves marked only with fieldstones. 2y

This was a really engaging, enthralling read, even without quotation marks! I really enjoyed this book and how it delved into midwifery and abortion. I also enjoyed figuring out the blanked out swear words 😂 it was partly based on a real life woman which I thought was great. 5 star

This is a really good book! I only have a section left, so should easily finish it tomorrow....probably before we even do Thanksgiving.
I'd recommend it!

Just realized this book doesn't have quotation marks and it's kinda bothersome.

Reviewsbylola The tagged book. It‘s about a young girl who grew up in unfortunate circumstances and finds herself as an apprentice for a midwife. I‘m only 100 pages in but it‘s a fantastic read. @Megabooks 5y

#FeistyFeb I love a good juicy historical fiction that centers around gutsy, spirited strong ladies! These three all lived in the 19th century and in some way helped shape woman's rights and lives. #HistoricalHeroines

Somehow I‘d missed this one. An amazing view of women‘s reproductive health care and pregnancy in NYC in the mid-1800‘s. Based on the actual life of Ann Lohman, also known as Madame Restell, this is well-researched, well-written. The details of the midwives' work were mesmerizing--felt a connection to the fictional Axie Muldoon and to Lohman. Plan to read Marge Piercy‘s Sex Wars for more from that era.

Historical fiction based on a woman in the 1800s who was a midwife who also performed abortions. Really enjoyed this story and the harsh realities of being an orphan and a woman at that time.
