Ravens in Winter
Ravens in Winter | Bernd Heinrich
6 posts | 1 read | 5 to read
One of the most interesting discoveries Ive seen in animal sociobiology in years. E.O. Wilson Why do ravens, generally understood to be solitary creatures, share food between each other during winter? On the surface, there didnt appear to be any biological or evolutionary imperative behind the ravens willingness to share. The more Bernd Heinrich observed their habits, the more odd the birds behavior became. What started as mere curiosity turned into an impassioned research project, and Ravens In Winter, the first research of its kind, explores the fascinating biological puzzle of the ravens rather unconventional social habits. Bernd Heinrich is no ordinary biologist. Hes the sort who combines formidable scientific rigor with a sense of irony and an unslaked, boyish enthusiasm for his subject, and who even at his current professorial age seems to do a lot of tree climbing in the line of research. I do love corvids, even if the Blue Jay's are gluttons at my feeders. Can I complain about the uptick in book prices at goodwill lately though? What's up with that?

TheBookHippie Seriously here as well 😳💵💸 3mo

Any day where my quarterly Raven Reads and monthly Sweet Reads show up together is a great day.

EvieBee Oh, sweet! I‘ve thought about treating myself to a book subscription… 2y
janeycanuck They are both Canadian - Raven Reads has shipped internationally for a while and it‘s a great box that features Indigenous authors and makers. Sweet Reads has just started shipping to the US but I‘ve had so many problems with them in the last few months, I‘ve stopped recommending it to people. 2y
merelybookish I was just going to ask about these subscriptions! Would you recommend the Raven Reads? 2y

janeycanuck @merelybookish Yes, I love it! It‘s quarterly and this is the fourth one I‘ve gotten, I think? The books have been great and I‘ve gotten some beautiful soap and tea and other things from Indigenous-led businesses. They also have a kids version. I‘ve been getting Sweet Reads since Aug/20 and I think they‘ve just bitten off a bit more than they can chew lately, there have been some problems. I‘m hopeful it gets better. 2y
merelybookish @janeycanuck Thanks! I have been reluctant to order a book box because mostly I just want books and not the other stuff. But like the idea of supporting Indigenous businesses. 2y
janeycanuck @merelybookish yeah, I was the same (I have a couple of friends that inherit a fair bit of stuff from Sweet Reads, actually.) But Raven Reads is only two things plus the book. They‘ve thrown in stickers, etc. as extras but it‘s about 2/3 consumables, like soap & tea & lip balm. And it‘s only quarterly so about 8-10 items over the course of the year. 2y

These two books with a #BirdontheCover have been on my shelves waiting to be read for over two years! I did start Ravens in Winter at some point, bookmarking a few pages of interest, but for some reason I didn‘t finish reading it. Maybe this is the year I finally read these? #BloomingBibliophiles

Although the raven was never evil in Native American mythologies, he was often a rascal...To raven the god, human beings are part of the menagerie he has created for his own amusement...He also devised an assortment of other difficulties for man in his role of mischief-maker, clown and god. #Mischief #QuotsyNov17
