Sarah Jane | James Sallis
6 posts | 3 read | 9 to read
A spare, sparkling tour de force about one woman's journey to becoming a cop, by master of noir James Sallis, author of Drive. Sarah Jane Pullman is a good cop with a complicated past. From her small-town chicken-farming roots through her runaway adolescence, court-ordered Army stint, ill-advised marriage and years slinging scrambled eggs over greasy spoon griddles, Sarah Jane unfolds her life story, a parable about memory, atonement, and finding shape in chaos. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she is named the de facto sheriff of a rural town, investigating the mysterious disappearance of the sheriff whose shoes she's filling--and the even more mysterious realities of the life he was hiding from his own colleagues and closest friends. This kaleidoscopic character study sparkles in every dark and bright detail--a virtuoso work by a master of both the noir and the tender aspects of human nature.

This book enthralled me. I don‘t quite know how to review it because it seems to cross genres…NYT Book Review says it best: “Spellbinding…like a piece of stormy poetry.”
I rarely reread books, but this is one I want to read again soon, knowing the plot,(of sorts)I can slow down and pay attention more closely to its brutal, raw, beauty.

Got this from my library via the Libby app. I was looking for another title, don‘t even remember what it was, and saw this. Being my name is Sarah Jane, I knew I had to give it a go. 🤓

I didn't know who James Sallis was, but I've learned that he has written MANY books & one was turned into the movie, Drive (haven't seen). It's nice to come out of my cave now & then! The air is fresh! Lol

I requested this on a whim & have no idea how to describe it, but its raw & tender humanity gripped me. Poetic, existential noir minus a conventional crime plot. Vivid characters & a fine slice of small-town USA. Superbly written. #netgalley

saresmoore I don‘t know about all that fresh air. I‘ve lit a nice candle in the cave and I feel pretty content... The book sounds great, though! 5y
