What a brilliant story! If you have the collection Dark Tales & haven't already read it, do yourself a favor and read it under the alternate title The Visit. ST Joshi said it's "the quiet, weird tale at its pinnacle." It's hard to disagree.

LeahBergen It‘s a weirdly wonderful story! 2y
vivastory @LeahBergen I think it's a new favorite! It's so good! 2y
BarbaraBB Quite a recommendation while I am not much of a fan of Oates in general. 2y
vivastory @BarbaraBB I've read only a few works by Oates & she is a bit hit & miss for me. This anthology she edited is stellar though. 2y

This story is so incredible. Years ago I read Bierce's Devil's Dictionary, but now I'm dying to read more of his stories. I started the tagged anthology today and there hasn't been a single dud yet.

vivastory Have you read this one @Bookwomble ? I was reminded a tad of Horla while reading it. 2y
Bookwomble @vivastory Hmmm, I don't think so, but I've read so many horror collections over the years, it's not impossible. I'll have a check on SFDB, but even if I have, I can't recall it. I like what I've read by Bierce, but don't have any books solely of his stories. 2y
Bookwomble @vivastory Ah, good old ISFDB! I do have this story in the tagged book, and have read it aaaages ago. I'll grab it and have a re-read 😊 2y

vivastory @Bookwomble I'm not familiar with SFDB. What is that? I'll be curious to see what you think. He seems to have been an important link between Poe & Lovecraft. 2y
vivastory @Bookwomble I found ISFDB. I had never head of it, but that looks like a very handy resource! 2y
sarahbarnes Ohhh, this looks like a very good story. 2y
vivastory @sarahbarnes It was both funny & unsettling, a rare combination! I hope you had a good weekend. 2y
sarahbarnes I love a good unsettling short story, and humor is great! I hope you had a good weekend, too and are enjoying fall! 2y

Mehso-so

Although I do have to read this book for my Argumentative writing class, I do enjoy the stories in it. There's a few I recognize from previous English classes in high school as well.

I'm stubborn so I usually finish what I start, no matter what, but here's a few that I #DNF. Some I plan to try again; others are a big nope. #ReadJanuary

Gormenghast - Struggled thru the 1st book & quit

Alice - Read the 1st book

American Gothic - Bailed. Twice.

Brief History - Put on hold to avoid spoilers

Kalevala - Good, but repetitive & LONG

Ulysses - WTF? Seriously.

Walden - Wanted to love it; got bored

Blockbuster Novel - On hold

I've fallen behind on the #booktober photo challenge so I'm trying to catch up! This one's on my currently reading list, but I've been neglecting it in favour of The Name of the Wind and some books about writing. #shortstories

I can't believe I missed this challenge yesterday!
This short story collection is fantastic; a wide variety of authors with some spine-tingling stories. The ones that you aren't always sure what exactly is going on. 👻

QueenAnne Added it to my tbr! Also, I would like to invite you to join us in October for #Scaretober ! More details will follow on my page 😉📚 8y
JPeterson @QueenAnne Ohh, yes! That sounds fantastic! Great idea! 👏👏 8y

Here is my #ThrowbackThursday selection. Neither of these books are in the Litsy "card"Catalouge. I am glad that now we can suggest books. Will the day ever come when we can add books? I'm guessing that most of us have books that aren't in the "card"Catalouge.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Some great covers! 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa And I wish I know, there must be a way to submit titles to the catalog list. @Litsy 8y
