Veronyka, Tristan, and Sev must stop the advancing empire from destroying the Phoenix Riders in this fiery sequel to Crown of Feathers, which #1 New York Times bestselling author Kendare Blake calls absolutely unforgettable! You are a daughter of queens. The world is balanced on the edge of a knife, and war is almost certain between the empire and the Phoenix Riders. Like Nefyra before you, your life will be a trial by fire. Veronyka finally got her wish to join the Riders, but while shes supposed to be in training, all she really wants to do is fly out to defend the villages of Pyra from the advancing empire. Tristan has been promoted to Master Rider, but he has very different ideas about the best way to protect their people than his father, the commander. Sev has been sent to spy on the empire, but maintaining his cover may force him to fight on the wrong side of the war. And Veronykas sister, Val, is determined to regain the empire she losteven if it means inciting the war herself. Such is your inheritance. A name. A legacy. An empire in ruin. As tensions reach a boiling point, the characters all find themselves drawn together into a fight that will shape the course of the empireand determine the future of the Phoenix Riders. Each must decide how far theyre willing to goand what theyre willing to lose in the process. I pray you are able to pass through the flames.

I did NOT like Val's POV chapters. I think the book would have been fine without them. But I devoured this book in just a couple days in between regular life stuff. Fantastic all around.
Elliot's additions were interesting though not necessarily necessary. I absolutely adored Kade's chapter and hope there are more in book 3. Tristan is still my favorite character for how honest and accepting he is.

BookDragonNotWorm Is that a real cactus? 😍 4y

BookDragonNotWorm It's the most magnificent little plant I've ever seen! The perfect background for Fawkes, too! 4y

#26 of my year and I‘m finally going to see what happens. Book one was SO GREAT and I‘ve been dying to read this book sooooo I‘m starting it today!

Caffeinated_Reader More like 3.5 stars
It was good and I was able to quickly remember my love for each character and I had no problem jumping back into the story. That being said I just feel like there was sooo much being said but it took forever for anything to actually happen. There was so much regurgitated dialogue and narrative that I felt like I was reading the same paragraph over and over. I
(edited) 4y
Caffeinated_Reader I also didn‘t like how the two “sisters” relationship developed. It‘s like come on Veronyka she‘s already showed you what type of person she is, she‘s already had so many second chances, stop waisting everyone‘s time and move on and away from her. That was annoying to me. (edited) 4y
Caffeinated_Reader I did like the character development of Elliot and Sparrow. They are my favorite. Sparrow is a true badass and just a fantastic character. I also enjoyed the ending but everything in between was just okay. 4y

I cannot wait for this to come! I've been anticipating its release since right after I read and fell in love with the first book! Hopefully it exceeds my expectations

This cover is great. It's book 2.

Owlcrate did an edition of book one that gave it a purple undertone and purple sprayed pages and it enhanced the cover. They are also doing a special edition of this cover. But I don't think it needs a special edition.

#CoverLove #YA Edition

Out February 11

SaturnDoo Oh I bet the purple is awesome. My favorite color 😁 I'm not feeling this cover either 😢 4y
LibrarianRyan @SaturnDoo not really. You can barely see the purple on the cover it‘s mostly red so the purple sprayed pages seem out of place. If I can easily find my copy I will take a pic 4y
SaturnDoo @LibrarianRyan ohhh that's not good to hear. Thanks I would love to see it. 4y

Sweetkokoro I loved the cover for the first book in this series but something about this cover bothers me and I don‘t like it haha. But I am looking forward to reading this one, I loved the first one. 4y
Kar2b I‘m getting the Owlcrate edition of this one - I‘m hoping they match well like the Folk of the Air series. At first, I didn‘t like Owlcrate‘s edition of Cruel Prince, but it grew on me. 4y
LibrarianRyan @Kar2b I still don't like any of the Folk of Air covers from Owl crate. My set is very miss-matched. I have Owlcrate book 1, galley book 2, and no book 3 yet. 4y
Kar2b @LibrarianRyan personally, I liked the Barnes and Noble covers best. I have Queen of Nothing Owlcrate and B&N editions. 4y
LibrarianRyan @Kar2b yes, I agree with that. 4y

This book was so amazing! I'm so glad I was able to get my hands on a digital arc.

Nicki Pau Preto managed to completely avoid the slow middle book pitfall and now I'm so mad I have to wait so long for the 3rd one.

It picks up pretty much exactly where Crown of Feathers left us and proceeds to take you on a wild adventure. My palms were actually sweating at one point and a slight prickling sensation in my eyes may have occurred.
