Beneath the Surface
Beneath the Surface: Killer Whales, SeaWorld, and the Truth Beyond Blackfish | John Hargrove, Howard Chua-Eoan
20 posts | 24 read | 19 to read
*Now a New York Times Best Seller* Over the course of two decades, John Hargrove worked with 20 different whales on two continents and at two of SeaWorld's U.S. facilities. For Hargrove, becoming an orca trainer fulfilled a childhood dream. However, as his experience with the whales deepened, Hargrove came to doubt that their needs could ever be met in captivity. When two fellow trainers were killed by orcas in marine parks, Hargrove decided that SeaWorld's wildly popular programs were both detrimental to the whales and ultimately unsafe for trainers. After leaving SeaWorld, Hargrove became one of the stars of the controversial documentary Blackfish. The outcry over the treatment of SeaWorld's orca has now expanded beyond the outlines sketched by the award-winning documentary, with Hargrove contributing his expertise to an advocacy movement that is convincing both federal and state governments to act. In Beneath the Surface, Hargrove paints a compelling portrait of these highly intelligent and social creatures, including his favorite whales Takara and her mother Kasatka, two of the most dominant orcas in SeaWorld. And he includes vibrant descriptions of the lives of orcas in the wild, contrasting their freedom in the ocean with their lives in SeaWorld. Hargrove's journey is one that humanity has just begun to take-toward the realization that the relationship between the human and animal worlds must be radically rethought.

This was really informative. A must read for anyone interested in killer whales. It goes into a lot detail into the terrible lives of whales in captivity tho which is heartbreaking. 🥺

While doing my March Wrap Up, I realized I completely forgot to review this book. If you've seen Blackfish, some of the information given in this book probably won't come as much of a shock to you. John Hargrove gives us a sneak peek into his journey of becoming a whale trainer at Seaworld & his 20+ years of dedication. There are color picture inserts of John performing with his whales. It was a decent read, but not overly exceptional. 3.5🌟

#anditsaugust #drive @RealLifeReading

I spend a ton of time driving. While I was substitute teaching, my commute was up to two hours, one way. I quickly realized that audiobooks were a great way to make that time a little more bearable. Here are some of the best audiobooks I've listened to while commuting!

I wanted to read this ever since watching Blackfish. So interesting and not as propaganda-ish as I was expecting.

I loved this book from a Sea World trainer about his journey from a true believer to an advocate against the company. He loves the whales deeply but knows they are being physically and psychologically tortured by captivity that curtails their movement and their social structures. 8 hour road trip today. Listening to a book about orcas at Sea World by a trainer who worked on Blackfish

Sad news about Tilikum, the orca who lived his life in captivity and the subject of the documentary Blackfish.

His story has changed how SeaWorld must do business, and I hope that one day, his kind won't be relegated to tanks for entertainment.

Mommamanzi This makes me so sad. I haven't heard it on the news yet and I only live a few miles away from sea world. 7y
dariazeoli @Mommamanzi I wonder if all the news channels are preoccupied with the airport shooting today... which is more sad news. Gah! We need a happy story! 7y

This AudioBook!!! ???? Orcas are truly fascinating creatures Hargrove entranced me from the start with his accounts of his experiences in the water with these majestic and clever killers. The book is truly informative and thought provoking; and as I listened to it my opinions of wild animal captivity started to change. As the author states, and I now believe, "Captivity is always captivity, no matter how gentle the jailer."

MrBook Nice review! 8y

"I believe in something greater and deeper about orcas. Every time a killer whale looked me in the eye, I saw intelligence shine through and felt his or her emotions. I sensed a presence in the orcas that is closer to the power of the myths surrounding their species, a consciousness that is both approachable and beyond human probing. They are both compelling and unfathomable."
