I am a girl but most days I feel like a question mark. Makeda June Kirkland is eleven-years-old, adopted, and black. Her parents and big sister are white, and even though she loves her family very much, Makeda often feels left out. When Makeda's family moves from Maryland to New Mexico, she leaves behind her best friend, Lena- the only other adopted black girl she knows- for a new life. In New Mexico, everything is different. At home, Makeda's sister is too cool to hang out with her anymore and at school, she can't seem to find one true friend. Through it all, Makeda can't help wondering: What would it feel like to grow up with a family that looks like me? Through singing, dreaming, and writing secret messages back and forth with Lena, Makeda might just carve a small place for herself in the world.

The kids are back today so they got to open their #blitsy packages. Corrine loved all her goodies. She‘s excited the most for the tagged book (another one I may have to swipe.) We‘ve been doing a lot of puzzles recently & this one looks fun. She‘s going to have to hide the bunny because the puppy thought it was for him - she snatched it back from him pretty quick. Thanks @Chelleo for hosting - the kids had a lot of fun (and so did I!)

Nebklvr Ways to make sunshine was a good book! Hope she enjoys it as much as I did. 2y

This book seemed incredibly long to me, and that‘s not usually a good sign when reviewing middle grade reads. I felt it improved towards the end as the family actively dealt with their difficulties, and I think it could be a really important book for readers who immediately connect to the narrator. However, if they don‘t connect, I‘m not sure it‘s one that will draw them in enough to get to the strong ending.

rockpools That‘s interesting. I tried this on audio... and then stopped. 3y
Daisey @rockpools If I hadn‘t been reading it from a specific list I‘m not sure that I would have kept picking it back up. 3y

This is an eloquent story of Makeda adopted into a white family as a baby. After a major move to New Mexico she and her sister Eve struggle to help their mom with mental health. Makeda deals with racism around her and does not have a good support system until she helps her sister understand at a deeper level what she is experiencing. #integrateyourbookshelves

Heartbreaking. Kids are begging for a story like this - perhaps they are a black child feeling out of place, perhaps they are adopted and feeling like they don‘t belong. Maybe they have a parent who suffers from mental health issues or they recently moved away from their best friend. ALL of that is captured in this book and is well done.
English nerds like me will be bothered by the fragmented sentences and the lack of any comma anywhere 🤷🏼‍♀️

I have mixed feelings about this book. The beginning is a primer on how not to parent in a transracial adoption and I found the parents annoying. The middle/end on a family dealing with mental illness was accurate and well done. I loved the main character as she grew into herself. But I couldn‘t get past my early feelings about the annoying parents. A child‘s eyes may see this through a different lens.

Daisey I just finished this and am considering how to write my review. I agree very much with yours. I felt this book was tough to get into and felt long. The later part was better, but I find it difficult to think of many young readers that would get that far unless they made an early connection to the main character. 3y

When Keda‘s white parents move the family to New Mexico, Keda is left to navigate a new middle school without her best friend, and just as her family life is unraveling.

This compelling story gives voice to life as a black youth in a white family, and the racism she faces every day while trying to figure out where she belongs.
