Widdershins
Widdershins | Jordan L. Hawk
Some things should stay buried. Repressed scholar Percival Endicott Whyborne has two skills: reading dead languages and hiding in his office at the Ladysmith Museum. After the tragic death of the friend he secretly loved, he's ruthlessly suppressed any desire for another man. So when handsome ex-Pinkerton Griffin Flaherty approaches him to translate a mysterious book, Whyborne wants to finish the job and get rid of the detective as quickly as possible. Griffin left the Pinkertons following the death of his partner, hoping to start a new life. But the powerful cult which murdered Glenn has taken root in Widdershins, and only the spells in the book can stop them. Spells the intellectual Whyborne doesn't believe are real. As the investigation draws the two men closer, Griffin's rakish charm threatens to shatter Whyborne's iron control. When the cult resurrects an evil sorcerer who commands terrifying monsters, can Whyborne overcome his fear and learn to trust? Will Griffin let go of his past and risk falling in love? Or will Griffin's secrets cost Whyborne both his heart and his life?

Widdershins is the first in a historical steampunk, magical, adventure series with a gay main character. This is escapist reading at its finest. The characters are awesome, the plots are fun, relationships develop throughout the series and everything feels vaguely cosy.

PuddleJumper I‘m a sucker for anything ‘museum/library magic escapades‘ especially if it‘s a bit silly like Warehouse 13. What made me stick with this series is that the main character is endearing and the side characters are brilliant.

This is very easy reading. I think there are 11 books in the series and a few short novellas and there is also another series set in the same world.

Queer steampunk fantasy shenanigans

It's a fun book, don't take it too seriously, and enjoy it for what it is

I sprung for WONDER WOMAN 1984 tonight as a family Christmas present and it wasn‘t nearly as good as the first one. Sadness.

Now it‘s sorta late and I‘m really tired, but I‘m gonna try to sink into WIDDERSHINS before I fall asleep. I‘ve been meaning to read Jordan L. Hawk for years and years, and I got a good vibe off the opening pages. Fingers crossed.

readordierachel I watched it tonight too and felt the same. Sigh. 3y
Laughterhp We watched it tonight too. Yeah, it was just okay. 3y
xicanti @readordierachel @Laughterhp I feel like disappointing movies somehow sting more when you paid $30 to watch them at home than when you shelled out the same amount at the cinema. 3y

I loved this! Thanks be to the tumblr drawing that made me curious enough to google what it was referencing. While it was at times a little repetitive, it‘s funny enough and the characters are lovely enough that I can‘t say I minded!

This is the point I gave up trying to read at the concierge desk... definitely not supposed to be cackling while guiding people to the sign in sheets 😂

Bath time with a book! I try to do it at least twice a week, both to make time for me and because a 40°C bath helps raise your body temperature and regulate your circadian rhythm -- with benefits for folks with depression (and most likely anxiety as well, since it's often co-morbid).

Romance isn't my thing, but Lovecraftian adventure is, and this has enough of the latter that I didn't hate it. Heck, I might even read the sequel.

Jordan L. Hawk is one of the authors at #GRL2019 and on my list of recommendations to my friend who is attending with me. She‘s paying for KU to get some books but this series isn‘t available there BUT it is one I own and can lend through Amazon. I‘ve been sending two at a time because you can only lend for 14 days and I want her to have time - she‘s devouring them so she‘s had time to go back and re-read.

A female archaeologist talking about the number of phallic symbols prevalent in her line of work.

jpmcwisemorgan I love this series. Are you reading it? 5y
Maewyn @jpmcwisemorgan Yes,a friend recommended them. I am trying to get said friend to come to Litsy but so far there has been resistance. 5y
jpmcwisemorgan I love this series. I belong to the FB group for the author too. Maybe if your friend doesn‘t want to try Litsy yet that could be something you do together first? 5y

Victorian American detective story with magic and monsters and science. A bit Mary Shelley, with smut. Actually a bit scary in places! M/M but it‘s hardly the main point of the book. I love the female character a lot.

Ha! Reminds me quite a bit of everything I loved in Monette's short stories about a depressive gay hero in a Lovecraftian world, but a softer, lighter take with happier endings and explicit sex. I devoured this like popcorn. Will pick up more in this series.

esurient Tagging recommended book. 6y
esurient May skip out of Book 2; am seeing reviews that declaim it the weakest in the series. 6y
esurient Was this Hawk's first book? Does their writing improve? Story and dialogue bits seemed a little repetitive and the slow character developments ill spaced with the fast sex. Or is that a hallmark of m/m fiction? Guess I'll find out. 6y
