Peacock Emporium
Peacock Emporium | Jojo Moyes
An early work from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Giver of Stars, Jojo Moyes, the story of a young woman who opens an eclectic shop and comes to terms with the secrets of her past. In the sixties, Athene Forster was the most glamorous girl of her generation. Nicknamed the Last Deb, she was also beautiful, spoiled, and out of control. When she agreed to marry the gorgeous young heir Douglas Fairley-Hulme, her parents breathed a sigh of relief. But within two years, rumors had begun to circulate about Athene's affair with a young salesman. Thirty-five years later, Suzanna Peacock is struggling with her notorious mother's legacy. The only place Suzanna finds comfort is in The Peacock Emporium, the beautiful coffee bar and shop she opens that soon enchants her little town. There she makes perhaps the first real friends of her life, including Alejandro, a male midwife, escaping his own ghosts in Argentina. The specter of her mother still haunts Suzanna. But only by confronting both her family and her innermost self will she finally reckon with the past--and discover that the key to her history, and her happiness, may have been in front of her all along.

Bailedbailed

Had trouble following (I'm not sure why), and bailed after the first few chapters. I did read the end to see if there was incentive to keep reading, and there wasn't. Not sure why I devoured Me Before You, After You, and Still Me, but I've bailed on all her other books

One quirky quote that did seem true to Cath‘s daughter Jessie, a central character in the novel.

Just finished this library book. My first by this author. It was erratic for me, just so-so. Village characters (though bit players) well drawn. Liked the title- reminds me of the peacocks that stroll noisily through my sister-in-laws Florida neighborhood🦚🦚.

marleed I love Jojo Moyes - esp the me before you series, but this book was a meh minus for me. The history of Portland and racism was interesting and important to me but the actual story - not so much. 4mo
kspenmoll @marleed I totally get what you are saying. 😃 4mo

An easy, fast read but a bit of a downer at times. There are a few plot twist that make up for it though.

marleed I didn‘t quite get this one. But I love Jojo! 4mo
Rebesta @marleed - She was relatable, but I liked Vivi. 4mo

Bailedbailed

I bailed at 21% / 3:08:47. Dislike all of the characters. Bored with every story line.

Liatrek I started this one a few weeks ago and I was surprised how much I didn‘t like it but only got about 50 pages before bailing. I normally love Jojo books and planned to try again. 6mo
DivineDiana Too bad! 😕 6mo
marleed I get that. I stayed with it because I hated to give up on JoJo. I would have given it a pan except that I enjoyed the last third raising it to a SoSo. I won‘t remember this when I look back on my 2019 reads. 6mo

Started this one a few days ago. Did anyone struggle with the time lines? In my head I was picturing 1920 and the Suzanna in 1960, not 1960 and 2001. Anyone else? I still am enjoying it. I love everything Jojo Moyes writes.

I would have liked this book more had I skimmed passed the first two-thirds to get to the last third. But then I might never know there is such a thing as a peacock bass.

This was sooo sooo sooo sooo very good!!! I absolutely loved it!!!😍😍😍😍😍😍
It also broke my heart! Ripped it out! Stomped on it! Chapter 14 & 18...Really? Really? That was needed? Seriously?
But it is brilliantly written and I could not put it down. Excellent foreshadowing! Go pick up a copy and read this masterpiece.😍😎😍😎😍😎😍

greenhairdontcare Haven‘t read this one by Jojo Moyes yet! Thanks! 9mo

And another 4 hours in the #TwelveInTwo challenge. Total just over 9 hours. Will be squeezing in a few more. I so totally enjoy this book. Not something I would have picked up if it was not for #2019BookHoroscope on Read It Foward, but I can't put it down.

This one is about to have an American edition for the first time. (Hence why I got a review copy.) But you can tell it‘s one of Moyes‘ earlier novels. There were parts I really enjoyed though. #howjessreadsin2019

MallenNC I didn't realize this was an older book. 9mo
C.Perone I thought this was new🤷‍♀️ Looking forward to it even more now, I prefer her earlier work when it wasn't so commercialized 9mo
