I get the author is going for a Raymond Chandler vibe, but it's more style over substance. I didn't find the mystery that hard to figure out, and I'm no fan of the unreliable narrator trope. The lead character's narcolepsy was a unique twist, but after awhile the various hallucinations and lost time jumps became tiresome. 3 💥💥💥

1. Half way through the Tagged book, a third of the way through The Splendid and the Vile, and 7 hours to go on Havana Nocturne.
2. I don't do re-reads.
3. I'm off work so I plan to treat myself to a steak for lunch, in celebration of dropping 25 pounds on the diet I started Dec 31. I'm also going to see either Call of the Wild or The Invisible Man. Any suggestions which I should see?

Audiobook

My familiarity with Tremblay is due to having read "A Head Full of Ghosts" & "Disappearance at Devil's Rock." Those two books are worlds apart from "The Little Sleep." This book is narrated by Mark Genevich, a recently certified private investigator with narcolepsy. His condition is a unique approach to the ambiguities (motivation, identity, etc) that are a staple of noir. This is definitely a send-up of noir, but a serious one about violence.

Paul Tremblay, in this riveting, sad, honest take on the hard-boiled detective story Hammett and Chandler created, manages to do something bold and unexpected. Mark Genevich, his flawed narcoleptic hero, must pull the truth out of the murk where his own questionable consciousness and memory are the real labyrinth he must traverse to solve the mystery. I highly recommend this slim private eye novel and can't wait to read the sequel.

New read: Paul Tremblay's "The Little Sleep," the story of a hapless narcoleptic detective (narcol-ective? Det-arcoleptic?) that is heartbreaking and hilarious at the same time. Loving it so far. Already glad there's a sequel.
