Long story short - I‘m going to Scotland for vacation! I saw that I can go on a literary pub tour, and it recommended reading some books by Scottish authors, including this one. It‘s from 1915 and is a classic “man on the run” with Germans as the bad guys. I can understand why it had hype at the time, but it was also one of those books where the hero runs into fortunate coincidences when things look grim. That‘s where the so-so comes in.

A light entertaining read but it won't turn your world upside down. The plot is moved along by the most extraordinary coincidences. Certainly more fall-off-your-chair-laughing than edge-of-your-seat...

I‘d throw this one in the same category as The Hitchhiker‘s Guide To The Galaxy: a good book to read when you need something light and just a little bit ridiculous. The soldiers in the First World War loved it for that very reason. So, if it can cure the misery of trench life, it can probably do wonders for your crappy day-job and lazy housemates. Finally got around to finishing this on Serial Reader. I found it enjoyable but nothing special. Found the end a bit of an anti climax

This was a fun, relatively short read on #SerialReader. It was originally published in 1915 and is the adventurous tale of Richard Hannah who is pursued by the police for a crime he didn‘t commit and from enemy spies who know he has information that has fallen into his hands. I‘d like to watch the Hitchcock movie as I‘ve read that it‘s fantastic.

This is a brilliant little book.

This is my tattered copy of The Thirty Nine Steps that I read in high school. Seems that I don't read a lot of #spynovels although I've heard of how good some authors are, like John Le Carre, Alan Furst, etc. This should be rectified soon. Perhaps include in my reading challenge for next year. 🤔 #photoadaynov16 @RealLifeReading
