2015 was a difficult year professionally. I found myself unemployed and at 50 ish, it seemed impossible I would work full time again. Cloudwish by Fiona Wood is an astonishing book and my 2015 pick. Van Uoc shows 2 distinct lives - an external one of obedience and passivity, and an inner one which is bold, snarky and rebellious. She‘s brilliant. Never listen to fools who dis Jane Eyre as being a story about a girl who gets her mean man. This is a character who gets what she wants and lives on her own terms by having moral fortitude, intelligence, courage, imagination and a will of iron. And that is one hell of a checklist.
so-soI liked this book. The premise was awesome and I loved reading about the parent's immigration and how the mc felt distanced from them by culture. There were a lot of slow parts though. There was school drama ad friend drama but not enough focus on the home/family life for my liking. That said, the romance was super sweet and lovely. *spoiler* I wish Van's parents met Billy in the book.
Cracking this one open next. I'm so interested in reading a story about a Vietnamese immigrant in Australia!
