Clockwork, Or, All Wound Up
Clockwork, Or, All Wound Up | Philip Pullman
8 posts | 19 read | 14 to read
Tick, tock, tick, tock! Some stories are like that. Once you've wend them up, nothing will stop them ... A tormented apprentice clock-maker, a deadly mechanical knight in armour - and the sinister Dr Kalmenius, who some say is the devil ... Wind up these characters, fit them into a story on a cold winter's evening, with the snow swirling down, and suddenly life and the story begin to merge in a peculiarly macabre - and unstoppable - way. Almost like clockwork ...

In my eternal quest to find short audiobooks I stumbled across this - creepy delight - of a writer of scary stories whose tale starts to come true…. and it was just the right length to take me from after lunch to home time. Hopefully I won‘t dream of clockwork boys and men with selective hearing.

megnews I‘m always looking for short audiobooks too! 3y

🎧 ‘Clockwork‘ succeeds where ‘The Boy with the Cuckoo-Clock Heart‘ fails: Pullman‘s short fantastical tale about automatons is set in a pre-digital age of timekeeping and has a clean plot line and (a) clear moral(s) to the story. Anton Lesser is excellent but the production values are terrible: It sounds like it was recorded in a tile bathroom and reverb was added to some lines.

🎧 Philip Pullman and Anton Lesser (the latter plays Qyburn on the GOT series and is the audiobook narrator for this and the Sally Lockhart series) are *perfect* for each other!

This is a novella-length story about... automatons? All I really know is that it promises to be macabre.

A wonderful spooky novella - highly recommended. Now to tackle THE BOOK OF DUST his new book. Really looking forward to it.

Deliciously creepy! A+ for having a non-evil (sweet!) black cat who healthily survives through the end of the story.
