In the tradition of Neil Gaiman and Iain Banks, Simon Sylvester brings an ancient myth to life with this lush, atmospheric coming-of-age taleNobody comes to the remote Scottish island of Bancree, and seventeen-year-old Flora cant wait to move to the mainland when she finishes school. So when a mysterious man and his daughter move into isolated Dog Cottage, Flora is curious. What could have brought these strangers to the island? The man is seductive but radiates menace, while Flo finds a kindred spirit in his daughter, Ailsa. Meanwhile, several of the men on Bancree have disappeared, unnerving the community. When a body washes ashore, suspicion turns to the newcomers. But Flo suspects something else, even though it seems impossible: She asks local residents for anything they know aboutselkies, the mythical women who can turn from seal to human and back again. Convinced of her new neighbors innocence, Flo is fiercely determined to protect her friend Ailsa. Can the answer to the disappearances, and to the pull of her own heart, lie out there, beyond the waves? From the Trade Paperback edition.

Somehow, not quite what I wanted, though I can't articulately express exactly what felt lacking.

I had some issues with the protagonist, whom I think such a story relies heavily upon for empathy and identification, and a couple of her actions.

In general, though, I quite enjoyed the setting, the storyline, the elements of magical realism, and will be keeping an eye on the author.

Strange but intriguing 🤔

Honestly, the cats right. This will definitely, positively, absolutely be the last purchase of this year.Only because there's two more days left in it!This year has been so crappy,I feel justified in buying lots of lovely lovely books to cheer me up.Besides, it's all your fault. At least half of these are #BlameItOnLitsy purchases, or more specifically, #BlameItOnLiberty. If Miss @Liberty continues to wax eloquently about books, who am I to resist?

Bit creepy, but dreamy. Great setting, mood, and lovely humor. Nice wind-up. Hmm.

It's 100 degrees so a book about selkies on the chilly Scottish coast seems like a good choice

Twocougs Darn you, sounded so good I had to go order it😉 3y

I didn't see myself fit to be a selkie's man. She scared me. I could sense the love in her. It was bigger than a sea. It was too much.
