I picked this up after hearing someone rave about it on a podcast and…clearly we do not have the same taste! Initially melodramatic then plodding, the plot is a thin as a tissue and there‘s basically no character development. Not good.

julesG I read an ARC and had similar thoughts. 8mo

I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new - don‘t judge me I have a lot of books.
Join the fun if you want. This is day 290.

Finally finished reading Golden Fury tonight! It was interesting finding out what particular materials were needed to make the Philosopher's Stone, and it was intriguing to see the Stone's possession of people. The story did feel a bit dragged towards the end, but I do admire that Thea had to make a serious decision towards the end. A YA that is a cross between fantasical realism and mystery.

Quick Blurb: A female alchemist in a world of men, Thea travels to England after her mother's failed attempt to create the Philiosopher's Stone. Can she achieve what her mother failed to do, and keep her sanity?

This was really, really good, with Lord Of The Rings / Jeckyll & Hyde vibes but after finishing the story I couldn't shake the feeling that something was missing. Hopefully there will be a sequel.

He laughed like it came from the loud bursting core of him. Like he couldn't have kept it in if he wanted to, and why would he want to? And when he was done laughing, he would look at me like no one else ever had. Like he saw only me, not an accessory to my mother, but as myself. And not as an odd girl who sharp edges would need to be softened. Will liked the edges. The sharper they cut, the more they delighted him.

I really enjoyed this debut ya historical fantasy novel. The book exceeded all my expectations and ended up being better than I thought it would be. My full review is on my blog now:

I was selected for the blog tour for this book that's publishing Tuesday... And I actually have no idea what I am doing (shocker!). Here is a link to the post:

I published but did absolutely no proofing, so if you see any errors, let me know. And if any of you has any insight as to what I was actually supposed to do, I'm all ears.

A great YA fantasy with a female protagonist you can root for! I think this author shows a lot of promise. #arc ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

#teamharkness The pursuit of the Philosopher's Stone is riddled w/greed & heartache but for Thea it's more than that. A promise of possibility. Of Revolution. Though the books is melancholic Thea's optimistic naivety provides a desperately needed glimmer of hope. Maybe the legends are real. Maybe she can succeed where so many have failed. Maybe she can save her Mother, her lover, her friend. She may lose herself, but what is love if not sacrifice?

StayCurious You write great reviews! 4y

Probably between a pick and so-so. Set in 18th century Europe, it‘s the story of 17 yo Thea, an alchemist whose mother is jealous of her abilities and whose father never knew she existed. Thea is obsessed with creating the Philosopher‘s Stone and its limitless power, but can she trust those she meets along the way to help her in her quest? A story of loneliness, of searching for a way to be accepted and admired. But also a journey to discover ⬇️

robinb if what one really desires is worth the price of losing one‘s self in the process. My issue was mostly not connecting well with the characters, and I can‘t really say why. Maybe I just didn‘t feel invested? The writing was fine (maybe a little slow in places), but there were some unfinished/unexplained pieces left hanging for me. Fans of YA fantasy will probably enjoy. 3.5/5⭐️ 4y

This book was so good. Like unexpectedly good. The writing is excellent. The story is engaging. It's interesting.

Thea's mother is an alchemist and when she goes mad, Thea has to figure out how to save her. France is no longer safe so she must find a way to get to England. Adventure ensues.

I was provided with an ARC of this book by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Though the story was okay, I was annoyed bythe MC throughout the book.

It lacked the mystery and action I was hoping for and the whole story felt dull, repetitive and unimpressive at the end. Overall, the plus points were the author's writing and the cover. The story had promise which it failed to fulfill.
