A teen grapples with ALS and his decision to die in this devastatingly beautiful debut novel infused with the haunting grace of samurai death poetry and the noble importance of friendship. Abe Sora is going to die, and hes only seventeen years old. Diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrigs disease), hes already lost the use of his legs, which means he can no longer attend school. Seeking a sense of normality, Sora visits teen chat rooms online and finally finds what hes been longing for: friendship without pity. As much as he loves his new friends, he cant ignore whats ahead. Hes beginning to lose the function of his hands, and soon hell become even more of a burden to his mother. Inspired by the death poems of the legendary Japanese warriors known as samurai, Sora makes the decision to leave life on his own terms. And he needs his friends to help him.

I don‘t read a ton of YL so I am not sure I have read enough works to compare it to. I enjoyed the story of the book and liked that it was set in modern day Osaka. I felt there was some problems with the book. In my opinion the book would have been improved by having the friends give their thoughts on the planned suicide. The book brings up a serious topic but I don‘t think explores it enough before the final decision is made.

#awesomeautumnbooks #falltitles
Autumn is my favorite season so I find it strange that I only have two books that I consider fall titles. I added my new autumnal colored blank book for extra fall-ness. It's going to be my new poetry notebook.

🍃🍃🍃🍃🍃 This was a sweet story about a teenage boy with a degenerative muscular disease who tries to come to terms with the fact that he won't ever get better. It's charming and will hit you right in the heart.

"I wish that everyone who has a chance would take it. That everyone who has a dream will chase it. For those of us that can't." This was such a good, sad book about a teen boy with ALS, facing the end. #readmyowndamnbooks

Beautifully written, bittersweet. Sora, a 17 yo boy, vs. rapidly progressing ALS. Tissue needed, readers.

This book is honestly so sad. Sora is such an inspiration at the beginning of the book about how he deals with his ALS. He knows that it's coming but he doesn't want to let it take him. He'd rather do it himself and save his loving mom the pain of watching him slowly waste away.
