Chasing My Cure
Chasing My Cure: A Doctor's Race to Turn Hope Into Action | David Fajgenbaum
6 posts | 2 read | 13 to read
The inspiring memoir of a young doctor and former college athlete who became a champion for people suffering from rare, under-researched diseases--all while battling his own. A former Georgetown quarterback nicknamed "The Beast," David Fajgenbaum was also a force in medical school, where he was known for his unmatched mental stamina. But things changed dramatically when he began suffering from inexplicable fatigue. In a matter of weeks, his organs were failing and he was read his last rites. Doctors were baffled over a condition they had yet to even diagnose; floating in and out of consciousness, Fajgenbaum prayed for the equivalent of game day overtime: a second chance. Miraculously, Fajgenbaum survived, but only to endure repeated near-death relapses from what would eventually be identified as a form of Castleman Disease--an extremely deadly and rare condition that acts like a cross between cancer and an autoimmune disease. When he relapsed on the only drug in development and realized that the medical community was unlikely to make progress in time to save his life, Fajgenbaum turned his desperate hope for a cure into concrete action: between hospitalizations he studied his own charts and tested his own blood samples, looking for clues that could unlock a new treatment. With the help of family, friends and mentors, he also reached out to other Castleman disease patients and physicians, and eventually came up with an ambitious plan to crowdsource the most promising research questions and recruit world-class researchers to tackle them; instead of waiting for the scientific stars to align, he proposed to align them himself. More than five years later and now married to his college sweetheart, his hard work has paid off: a treatment that he identified has induced a tentative remission and his novel approach to collaborative scientific inquiry has become a blueprint for advancing rare disease research. His incredible story demonstrates the potency of hope, and what can happen when forces of determination, love, family, faith and serendipity collide.

A well told story of a young man‘s battle with a horrible disease. I was amazed by the number of times he was at “death ‘s door” only to pull through yet again. My only complaint with the book was that for me it was a bit too detailed on the scientific end, but I recognize that people who have this disease want to know all that they can about it because it is so rare.

#RedRoseSeptember One from my virtual TBR ~ a once decorated athlete turns his drive & dedication to medicine when his mom dies from cancer. However tables are turned when it‘s discovered that the Dr now is in need of a #remedy to treat his rare disease. Memoir is compared to Atul Gawande and Paul Kalanithi.

arlenefinnigan Sounds heartbreaking but I do love a medical memoir #stacked 5y
Cinfhen Ohhhh!! Another good idea for #Booked2020 #MedicalMemoir / I LIKE IT 💕 5y

I‘m finished with my first #24in48 #readathon book and #arc from #NetGalley. It wasn‘t what I expected - I had very high expectations after Paul Kalanithi‘s When Breath Becomes Air - but in the end, I still decided to up my rating to ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. Review will come at a later time. I want to dive into my next read. Work will really hinder my teaching my goal today so I don‘t want to spend time on things that can be done after this weekend.

Sometimes it‘s nice to be forced to slow down and wait for something because it means I can read without feeling guilty about not being productive otherwise. Waiting on my next #fosterdog while reading a #netgalley ARC.

TheAromaofBooks Yes, sometimes I'm happy to be “stuck“ waiting for something - it's guilt-free reading time! 5y

Anxiously waiting to get home from work to get back to the ARC of one of my favorite genres, medical memoirs. After reading When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi, I‘m searching for the next medical memoir to blow me away.

GondorGirl I love your furbabies! 😻😻 5y
Bookbroad I loved that book! Might be an obvious recommendation but have you read ‘this is going to hurt?‘ Hilarious and terrifying read! 5y
TheShaggyShepherd @Bookbroad I haven‘t yet. Thank you! Kalanithi‘s book is what got me started on this trend so I don‘t know anything else yet. 5y
Bookbroad @IvoryLunatic ah well you have a treat in store! Enjoy! 5y

A must read for anyone pursuing jobs in medicine, and for everyone dealing with a rare disease. David Fajgenbaum is author, med student, doctor, researcher, patient and guinea pig for the rare Castleman Disease. Well-written; it‘s neither clinical nor maudlin as the memoir divulges the unknown world of clinical trials and the surprisingly unscientific approach to treatment protocols. I was rooting for Dr. Fajgenbaum from start to finish.
