The Thicket | Joe R. Lansdale

ALA Reading List Award for History, Short List Love and vengeance at the dark dawn of the East Texas oil boom from Joe Lansdale, "a true American original" (Joe Hill, author of Heart-Shaped Box). Jack Parker thought he'd already seen his fair share of tragedy. His grandmother was killed in a farm accident when he was barely five years old. His parents have just succumbed to the smallpox epidemic sweeping turn-of-the-century East Texas--orphaning him and his younger sister, Lula. Then catastrophe strikes on the way to their uncle's farm, when a traveling group of bank-robbing bandits murder Jack's grandfather and kidnap his sister. With no elders left for miles, Jack must grow up fast and enlist a band of heroes the likes of which has never been seen if his sister stands any chance at survival. But the best he can come up with is a charismatic, bounty-hunting dwarf named Shorty, a grave-digging son of an ex-slave named Eustace, and a street-smart woman-for-hire named Jimmie Sue who's come into some very intimate knowledge about the bandits (and a few members of Jack's extended family to boot). In the throes of being civilized, East Texas is still a wild, feral place. Oil wells spurt liquid money from the ground. But as Jack's about to find out, blood and redemption rule supreme. In The Thicket, award-winning novelist Joe R. Lansdale lets loose like never before, in a rip-roaring adventure equal parts True Gritand Stand by Me--the perfect introduction to an acclaimed writer whose work has been called "as funny and frightening as anything that could have been dreamed up by the Brothers Grimm--or Mark Twain" (New York Times Book Review).

🎧 An old western coming-of-age book. Beware: horror, dark humor & use of N word. Great characters! Jack Parker a red headed innocent young man on a mission. Eustace the grave digger part black white & Comanche. Shorty a well educated dwarf (often called a midget) lectures, star gazes & kicks ass. Jimmie Sue a working girl, Jack's 1st & joins his mission. Lastly a 600lb hog, grandpa & LuLu (Jack‘s kidnapped sister). Great narration! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️2/3

Not my favorite book by Landsdale. The main character isn‘t very likable and is naive to the point of frustration. The main plot is all about saving his sister but instead the characters constantly camp and have long drawn out conversations for most of the book which really ruins the pace that is set in the beginning of the book. Some chapters are literally nothing but dialogue which does very little to drive the story forward.

This book took a bit to get into but I am glad I stuck it out. A gruesome, violent, sometimes funny and touching story starring morally ambiguous characters (and one wild hog. Literally. A hog) set in the late 1800s. The writing was strong and I loved that the narrator broke the 4th wall at times. This book isn't for everyone but if you can handle graphic violence and you like westerns & people with questionable morals and motives, get on this.

LeahBergen This sounds good! 👍🏼 8y

A gun-slinging, bounty-hunting dwarf, a son-of-a-slave who needs to avoid the drink, a wild pig, a prostitute, and a sometimes Sheriff join forces with a God-fearing teen to save his kidnapped sister and avenge his Grandpa's death in turn-of-the-century TX. Not for the faint at heart. I loved it!
