Ivan: The Remarkable True Story of the Shopping Mall Gorilla
Ivan: The Remarkable True Story of the Shopping Mall Gorilla | Katherine Applegate
5 posts | 8 read | 4 to read
In a spare, powerful text and evocative illustrations, the Newbery medalist Katherine Applegate and the artist G. Brian Karas present the extraordinary real story of a special gorilla. Captured as a baby, Ivan was brought to a Tacoma, Washington, mall to attract shoppers. Gradually, public pressure built until a better way of life for Ivan was found at Zoo Atlanta. From the Congo to America, and from a local business attraction to a national symbol of animal welfare, Ivan the Shopping Mall Gorilla traveled an astonishing distance in miles and in impact. This is his true story and includes photographs of Ivan in the back matter.

I loved the YA book “The One and Only Ivan”. This is a really nice children‘s story about the same gorilla with such a sad life. Really great illustrations. Despite it being so short and succinct (it‘s a kid‘s book), this one still had me crying a couple of times. There are a few pages at the end with a longer textual summary of Ivan‘s life and a note from one of the zookeeper‘s who took care of him in his last decade of life

The One and Only Ivan is a great book. Not many people know about its nonfiction picture book companion. This is a picture of my son with his statue at the Pt Defiance zoo. He never lived there. While he was caged at a mall, the zoo animals were in tiny pens, not much better. At the time of his rescue people realized that we needed to improve how we treat animals. I grew up in Tacoma with Ivan, his story says a lot about us. #everybodybooks

mandarchy My 4th grade end of the year treat was a class trip to the beach at Pt. Defiance. We could hear them tranquilizing the animals so they could send them to other zoos before they remodeled. Up till then, animals were kept on concrete pads with some straw surrounded by iron bars. I remember a lot of concrete and iron. Cindy the elephant, I remember surrounded by a chain link fence. She was popular for being a little crazy. 2y
mandarchy The mall where Ivan lived was a discount store. It really had a chicken that played tic tac toe, but there was no elephant there. We could see him through a tiny window. He just sat around. I don't think I ever saw him move. In my memory, there's no color. It was so sad. 2y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A children's picture book about the true story of Ivan, the gorilla we all got to meet and fall in love with in Applegate's other book, The One and Only Ivan. The illustrations were ok but the story is indeed remarkable how Ivan came to live in a shopping mall in Tacoma Washington.

I loved Applegate's "The One and Only Ivan" so I'm delighted she followed up with a picture book. This is a beautiful story of how people stood up for what was right. I needed an everyday heroes kind of story today.
