The myth: Alice was an ordinary girl who stepped through the looking glass and entered a fairy-tale world invented by Lewis Carroll in his famous storybook. The truth: Wonderland is real.

This was required reading for my son's English class, so I read it with him. I was disappointed it wasn't more to our liking. There were too many details that were supposed to be clever that had me rolling my eyes. The worst thing, for me, was the White Rabbit being reimagined as Bibwit Harte (which is a terrible and unnecessary anagram), who is a large-earred albino.

My charity shop finds for today. Couldn't believe my luck when my sister spotted the looking glass wars! Me and my fiancé love wonderland books and had been after this set. Praying they get the other 2 books in 📖♥️♣️♦️♠️📚 happy reading all

LibrarianRyan Love love love the looking glass wars. 4y
hannah-leeloo @LibrarianRyan I've seen many mixed reviews on this, I love wonderland books so I'm excited to read it after finding the others to the set 4y
LibrarianRyan @hannah-leeloo what I like about it is that it's not magic, it's all imagination. When i was still working with kids this was a big thing because we had so many parents apposed to books with magic. I liked that I could find a retelling of a classic that was all imagination and science, no magic involved. 4y
hannah-leeloo @LibrarianRyan very true, I've not long finished the splintered series and really enjoyed that wonderland tale. Got to love the world of nonsense 4y

I struggled through the first 50 pages.... the characters were undeveloped and the write style was too bland. It‘s such a shame. It had good potential but I can‘t read anymore 🙁😟

This book isn‘t for me. It lacks focus. I don‘t care for the budding romance bw the 7yo girl and 10yo boy. I feel like the author tried too hard to shoehorn in every character from both Alice and Looking Glass. There was just too much going on.

I absolutely love this book. It‘s a Alice Wonderland Retelling. Frank Beddor does a great job describing Wonderland and I love all of the action. This is my favorite book this year. Plus I just got my new Wonderland book sleeve. Isn‘t it BEAUTIFUL?!

LibrarianRyan Love love love this book. I love that it's fueled by imagination instead of magic and bloody enough for the toughest kid. 6y
398.2 Exactly!!!! You explained it perfectly. I loved that it was about imagination because that‘s what Wonderland is all about. I got this for 50 cents at a library sale and I am ordering the rest of the series today. Have you read all of them? @LibrarianRyan 6y
LibrarianRyan @398.2 I have them. I've read all the Hatter M graphic novels. I've taught this book a few times. I've worked in places where parents won't let their children read "Magic" books so this was a nice change. 6y

398.2 @LibrarianRyan I had no idea he did a graphical novel of the Hatter. I am going to buy those too. Ya it‘s unique that the power is imagination. Really enjoyed this. 6y
LibrarianRyan @398.2 there is also a diary/scrapbook type of book. This was optioned for a movie but then Disney made their Alice and this was scrapped. 6y
398.2 @LibrarianRyan I‘ll have to check this out too! I really wish they made into a movie. 6y
quillable Um that book sleeve is amazing 😍😍😍 6y

I didn't hate it. Easy day off reading.

blithebuoyant Did you pick up the rest of the series by chance? I read the first one in middle school but didn't end up finishing the next two until much later, after I had already graduated lol I did love the whole series though, and the same narrator also narrates the Eragon series. 6y
MeJeMiller @l.kadie I did pick up the other 2 in paperback. They‘re sitting in my book room on a TBR pile. 6y

Surprisingly, I didn't like this as much as the first time I read it. The book felt slower than I remember, and I didn't really mesh with the writing style anymore. It felt a bit too simple for me sometimes.

I have read this book at least 3 times and this is my second time listening to it. Maybe now I will get to reading the sequel Seeing Redd. Now that I am packing to move, I found 3 copies. The reader has such a way of reading that you can not help but get lost in the telling. Plus where appropriate there is a nice rock music background which fits the story. Plus the tech they do for General Doppelganger is awesome. Long review on Goodreads.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Really being genuine here: what do you like about this book? I felt that it was an excellent concept but very poorly written, one of the worst I've ever read. Asking not to be rude, but because I value your opinion. 7y
LibrarianRyan @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I love the idea of the story, and I have read many things written way worse. I also love it for its non-use of magic. I read this when I was still a children's librarian and many parents were pulling their kids out of book club if it had any mention of magic. And I also, like it because it kept the boys interested. In the book club I ran we always did a classic and a retelling and so many or female centric. 7y
LibrarianRyan @TobeyTheScavengerMonk continued: when I first described this book you saw the boys eyes light up. Assassins, warrior milliners who protect the princess, etc. When it originally came out it was filling a very large hole in teen lit. Now if I was to pick it up today against heartless, Blood of wonderland, and Chronicles of Alice, I don't know. (I've only read heartless). I guess I liked how the story was different, but still the same. 7y
See All 9 Comments
LibrarianRyan @TobeyTheScavengerMonk one more thought to go with that. When I was young I read a book called Invincible Summer. Now the book would be vilified and people would say John Green did it better, (Fault in Our Stars) but I'm still going to love that book because of how it effected my in 6th grade. While I can't stand John Green. Not every thing ages well. When talking with the kids about classics and Retellings we always talked about what made it a 7y
LibrarianRyan @TobeyTheScavengerMonk continued: classic and was it worth it. Example, the group read Peter Pan and most hated it because it was not the Disney story the grew up with. Sorry for being long winded. And I never mind genuine questions or debate. 🤓 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @LibrarianRyan Thanks so much! Your explanation really helped me grasp why I reacted the way I did. I 100% agree that is is an excellent concept, and I typically love twists on classic tales, but I think a big part of the problem was that when I picked it up in the SF/F section (because of the awesome cover art) I had zero indication that it was targeted at anyone other than adults. I can see it being a great... 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk hook for younger readers. That explains a lot of my complaints. Things like the written sound effects, the juvenile humor (stoned caterpillars, fat guy gets stuck in chair), and the vague way the imagination powers work (they can imagine toy soldiers and talking guinea pigs into existence but not apparently food or money or jewels even though people are mining and hungry) make much more sense when taking into account that it was... 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk written with younger readers in mind. You also make a good point that I hadn't thought of that it is cool that emphasis is placed on imagination as a power rather than magic. Thanks again. 7y

Like many others, I didn't quite understand the #BookThroughSomething prompt. I'm also not artistic when it comes to photography. So, I'm cheating a little bit and posting about a trilogy that involves the use of looking glasses, pools of water that transport people to other worlds, and traveling by portal. #Novemberland

I love this book and it's accompanying graphic novel series Hatter M. It's a play on Alice in Wonderland but it's action and tech packed. It runs on the power of imagination. Hatter M with his hat that becomes a many blades throwing knife is my pic for #mancrush. He risks his life over and over to save the snotty princess. (Who grows up to be a better person) #octphotochallenge.

BeththeBookDragon Was this originally going to be a series? I patiently waited for the second, but it never came! 8y
LibrarianRyan Yes. 1 looking glass war, 2 seeing red, 3 Arch Enemy. As for hatter M I thought there was two but I don't remember. There are also some side books. 8y

I have been thoroughly enjoying digging around for Alice retellings and stories inspired. Some have been great and some have...not. So far I like this story, I hope the library gets the second book in the trilogy soon.

A bit of historical fiction, a lot of fantasy, and even a touch of steampunk... There are a lot of ideas here; but not as fully realized as one might yearn for; and it's not as dark as, say Suzanne Collins' Gregor the Overlander series. Guessing it's really for MG libraries/readers
