In a Glass Darkly
In a Glass Darkly | Sheridan Le Fanu
This remarkable collection of stories, first published in 1872, includes Green Tea, The Familiar, Mr. Justice Harbottle, The Room in the Dragon Volant, and Carmilla. The five stories are purported to be cases by Dr. Hesselius, a 'metaphysical' doctor, who is willing to consider the ghosts both as real and as hallucinatory obsessions. The reader's doubtful anxiety mimics that of the protagonist, and each story thus creates that atmosphere of mystery which is the supernatural experience. This new annotated edition includes an introduction, notes on the text, and explanatory notes. About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

This was my 52nd book this year! It‘s the first time that I have met a reading goal in forever years. I‘m excited that I will surpass it this time. I really think getting involved more on Litsy and other outlets has inspired me to keep coming back to books this year, even when I had slumps.

Pickpick

This was wonderful. I enjoyed how each story has a different take on the supernatural occurrences. Some have “scientific” explanations, on the fence between hallucinations and actual spirits. One story only seems to be supernatural to advance the plot. And then, of course, Carmilla is firmly a supernatural story. Spoiler- it‘s the best one in this collection. It‘s a great example of suspense where the reader knows but the characters don‘t.

Before I begin the final story, “Carmilla,” I thought I‘d post my thoughts on the lesser know stories. I must say Le Fanu is good at writing creepiness. I think “Mr. Justice Harbottle” is the best story so far, with the spirit world seeking vengeance against the corrupt judge. However, “The Familiar” captured my imagination as well, with moments of true terror. Now, on to the famous “Carmilla.”

Hammock reading after work, the perfect way to wind down. Reading this classic for my Gothic Book Club. So far it's very, very strange lol

Pickpick

As with many collections of stories, this one was mixed for me. I thought the first 3 stories were ok, but I really enjoyed the last 2. "The Room in the Dragon Volant" was a fascinating story and probably my favorite. "Carmilla" was the only story I knew of when I started, and I liked the opportunity to experience an early vampire story that has influenced so many others since.

I‘ve been listening to this one again the last few days and finished “The Room in the Dragon Volant” this evening. I had a hard time getting into this story, but I think it was just a matter of taking a while to sort out the characters on audio. Once I got into it, I really enjoyed the story and its gothic aspects.

Uh oh . . . according to “Green Tea,” frequently drinking green tea late at night may lead to visions of a spectral demonic monkey. No cup of tea for me tonight. 😂 🍵 🐒

I finished the first story of this collection on audio this morning and the second, “The Familiar,” this afternoon. Not my normal reading fare, but strangely interesting.

zsuzsanna_reads I love le Fanu, but I did find Green Tea more hilarious than scary 😂 5y
Daisey @zsuzsanna_reads I‘ve listened to three of his stories now, and I‘m still not quite sure what I think of his style. I had hoped to listen to this earlier in the fall and I think that timing might have been better. I am enjoying it though and looking forward to Carmilla which I‘ve heard mentioned the most. Any favorites of his to recommend? 5y

An early work of gothic stories. They are filled with ghosts, spirits and real vampires.
These short stories are fun to read. Remarkable however is that I liked the story best in which in the end no supernatural powers were at work. #1001books
