There‘s a ghost-y element to this novel, which is mostly about how the history of one family and of Ireland itself is haunting for the characters.

Whew. Man. This book. So timely, during the Supreme Court confirmation hearings. I think I will pick up anything this author writes. It got a little messy in the last third, but wrapped up strongly. A book for all witchy women, the history we carry, and the strength we have to rise up.

paper.reveries Awesome review. Adding this one my stack! 3y

This is my July wrap up. It was a great reading month. I forgot I also read The Blue Castle back at the first of the month! I loved Pelosi btw.

Finished this one last night and really enjoyed it. Some things I predicted, others I did not. Very haunting and atmospheric, this is a story that will stick with you long after you read the last page.

A ya sort of fairy tale about a girl who had a family curse and what she does to break it. About sisters and family and what it means to be bad.

This seemed like the right book to read at an apple orchard.

tracey38 Oh, what fun! I've always wanted to visit an apple orchard. 4y
ferskner @tracey38 it seems like you'd have tons to choose from in NC! My favorite one is actually near Asheville. I didn't grow up with some orchards but I've made it a must-do activity in the fall now that I have access. 4y
tracey38 @ferskner yeah, I'll have to look some up. 4y

Deena‘s sister Mandy has disappeared and is presumed dead but Deena refuses to believe that. Her theory is supported when letters start arriving after Mandy‘s funeral. The letters from Mandy are about their family‘s history and curse.

The first 3/4 of the book I really enjoyed and then it sort of lost me at the end. I‘ll definitely be checking out other books by this author.

Warning: this is not a light hearted book. It covers some deep topics.

When Deena's wild and mysterious sister Mandy disappears - presumed dead - her family are heartbroken. But Mandy has always been troubled. It's just another bad thing to happen to Deena's family. Only Deena refuses to believe it's true.
And then the letters start arriving. Letters from Mandy, claiming that their family's blighted history is not just bad luck or bad decisions - but a curse, handed down through the generations.

TW: A grandfather drugs, rapes and impregnates his teenage granddaughter.
I tend to come out of every Moira Fowley-Doyle book wanting to fight the patriarchy. This is a pro-choice book. I freaking loved how the duel timelines tied together. It showed how religious institutions have multi-generational effects against women, feminism, and access to healthcare. On a positive note, the ending is a hopeful one: Keep fighting for change and be loud.
