Tell Me | Joan Bauer
7 posts | 5 read
The unofficial town motto is "Nothing bad ever happens in Rosemont" where twelve-year-old Anna has come to stay with her grandmother, Mim, hoping to forget her worries about her parents' troubled marriage. She'll be busy with the town's annual Flower Festival, a celebration with floats and bands that requires weeks of preparations. But before long, Anna finds herself involved in a very big problem. When she observes a girl her own age who seems to be being held against her will, Anna can't forget the girl's frightened eyes and she is determined to investigate. "When you see something, say something" she's been toldbut what good does it do to speak if no one will listen? Luckily, a take-charge girl like Anna is not going to give up. Told with Joan Bauer's trademark mixture of humor and heart, Tell Me will enthrall her many fans and win her new ones.

I picked up Joan Bauer's middle-grade novel Tell Me after hearing about it from @definitelyra. What a powerful novel. Twelve-year-old Anna, an aspiring actress, is trying to weather her parents' horrible arguments and potential separation. To give them some space to work things out (and to remove her from the source of great anxiety), her parents send her to stay with her grandmother, Mim, just in time for her small town's Flower Festival. ⬇️

UnabridgedPod Early in her stay, Anna witnesses a strange interaction between a girl her age in a van and the adults she's with. Worried for the girl's safety, Anna takes action to draw attention to her plight.⠀

Tell Me is the first book I've read by Bauer, and it is such a strong read for this age group. The narrative is honest and real-- ⬇️

UnabridgedPod Anna is a believable protagonist whose decision to speak up about what she saw provides an excellent model for readers this age. Through the book, we see how hard it can be to speak up, particularly when others dismiss our concerns, but also how important it is to move past their dismissal to take the actions that we can. The book is realistic, as well, about what Anna can do: she can't single-handedly rescue the girl. ⬇️ 4y
UnabridgedPod Instead, her voice and her confidence are the weapons she can wield against something wrong in her world.⠀

Have you read this novel? What other middle-grade reads have you read that address human trafficking?

#2 If you are into a mystery book with determination, this is the book for you! Anna is staying with here grandmother for the annual flower festival but one day she sees a girl her age that appears that she is being held against her will! Anna refuses to forget what she saw and find the girl wearing the yellow scrunchie. The book started slower but in time this book can keep you at the edge of your seat!

MissYaremcio Great review Tia! Keep up the good work! 5y

Happy end of 2017!!!!! Thank god. 🙄

You guys know I love comics. I can't shut up about them. Now I want to know: what was YOUR favorite comic or graphic novel you read this year? Comment or tag me in a separate post, whatever. What was the best comic/graphic novel you read this year, and why?

AmyG 2018 will be the year I read my first graphic novel. I bought this for myself for Hanukkah. 6y
Sue I don‘t read many of them. I love Bitch Planet though. 6y
minkyb Saga, especially the later ones like 5 and 6. I had tried other series‘ but this is the one I look forward to! Would not have known about it without Litsy. 🤗 6y
Eyelit For me it‘s a toss up between Saga and Lazarus. Both have good storytelling and great characters. 6y
silentrequiem Oh man. How to choose? Either Saga Volume 7 (my heart! *sob*), or The Tea Dragon Society. Oh, or Heathen Vol 1. Or The Unstoppable Wasp Vol 1. Or Mockingbird Vol 2. Or The Memory of Water. Gah. Too hard! *falls over* 6y

Joan Bauer takes on increasingly serious issues in her middle school level books. Here, she takes on trafficking. I love exploring serious issues through YA books. Bauer writes about them in a way that is manageable and not so heavy, yet doesn't trivialize the issue. She writes about kids who are brace and creative and makes me want to go back to childhood. I only wish she would include more diversity in her work.
