West of Sunset
West of Sunset | Stewart O'Nan
"In poor health, with his wife consigned to a mental asylum and his finances in ruins, he struggled to make a new start as a screenwriter in Hollywood. By December 1940, he would be dead of a heart attack. Those last three years of Fitzgerald's life, often obscured by the legend of his earlier Jazz Age glamour, are the focus of Stewart O'Nan's gorgeously and gracefully written novel. With flashbacks to key moments from Fitzgerald's past, the story follows him as he arrives on the MGM lot, falls in love with brassy gossip columnist Sheilah Graham, begins work on The Last Tycoon, and tries to maintain a semblance of family life with the absent Zelda and daughter, Scottie. Fitzgerald's orbit of literary fame and the Golden Age of Hollywood is brought vividly to life through the novel's romantic cast of characters, from Dorothy Parker and Ernest Hemingway to Humphrey Bogart."--

Did I really mean to read a book about F. Scott Fitzgerald‘s last few years and Zelda‘s hospitalization? No. But I did want to read an O‘Nan story. Somehow the author kept my interest through his writing style, even as the book began to lag. Not necessarily O‘Nan‘s fault - I mean how many times can you make it interesting that Fitzgerald fell off the wagon yet again? Would I recommend the book? Probably not. But I enjoyed O‘Nan‘s effort.

BarbaraBB I always enjoy O‘Nan too. I haven‘t read this one though 1w
Suet624 @BarbaraBB this might be a good one to skip. :)

The bottom half of our tv stand 😁! Several nice benefits of having the books there:

1. It‘s our coffee-table book spot.
2. They block all the unsightly wires in the back.
3. They‘re nice to look at when there‘s ads/commercials.
4. It‘s more shelving for all these darn books! 😆
5. It shows that books are always on our minds in this home.
6. It adds sophistication, as books are wont to do.
7. It‘s comforting.
8. They add to the room‘s warmth.

Jee_HookedOnBookz I love this! Your explanation especially! 🤣🤣👍🏼❤️❤️ 5y

Velvetfur Lovely photo 😁 I don't even own a television (watch things online if I really want to watch something) so it's books all the way for me 😁👍 5y
Velvetfur Sorry I don't know why that's under a spoiler tag, I must have hit that by mistake! 5y

This story takes the reader inside O'Nan's imagining of F. Scott Fitzgerald's final years, struggling to make ends meet as a screenwriter in 1930s Hollywood in the face of his failing health and alcohol addiction. For whatever reason, I've always been more interested in Fitzgerald's life than his fiction and this book fit the bill for me. Compelling and sad. #24in48 #readathon

"Why was he drawn to complicated women, or were all women--all people, finally--complicated?" ?

F. Scott Fitzgerald was #CaliforniaDreaming but inevitably lost his #CaliforniaLove. This book is a fictional wondering about his time there.

"He'd had a talent for happiness once. Though, he was young, then, and lucky. But wasn't he lucky now? Again?" - This book is making me maudlin.

Now that he was happy, he could be unhappy again.

This book tells a story of Fitzgerald in Hollywood, his relationship with Sheilah Graham, and Zelda and Scottie. There have been some novels about Zelda recently, but I hadn't read much about Sheilah. It is a quick and entertaining book, but there were a few scenes that I wondered about. #bookisholympics book six

Shortstack I'm about 1/4 through a Hemingway bio that I want to finish before I start this. It will definitely be a bigger priority once I'm reading the Lost Generation for my book club! 8y
