The Matriarch
The Matriarch: Barbara Bush and the Making of an American Dynasty | Susan Page
4 posts | 6 read | 1 reading | 4 to read
A vivid, immersive biography of former First Lady and Bush clan matriarch Barbara Bush, one of the most storied women in American political history. Barbara Pierce Bush -- political powerhouse, Bush family matriarch, former First Lady, and celebrated public servant -- has not been the focus of a robust, mainstream biography for over a decade. In THE MATRIARCH, her story is revived and told in full: from growing up in Rye, New York to becoming America's First Lady, every tragedy and triumph is rivetingly told. An institution in and of herself, Barbara Bush's role in American history cannot be understated. Beginning while Second Lady and through her time as First Lady, she invested herself deeply in expanding literacy programs in America, launched efforts to combat homelessness, and eventually became the first woman since Eleanor Roosevelt to speak at her party's national convention in 1988. While her own political beliefs sometimes differed from her husband's, Barbara Bush nevertheless became an astute political campaign strategist, helping him to gain the nomination and win the election. Barbara Bush's accomplishments, struggles, and contributions are many. Now, Susan Page brings them all into one place in THE MATRIARCH, a book certain to cement Barbara Bush as one of the most unique and influential figures in American history.

Barbara is such an interesting person! As a woman of her generation, she married young and unconditionally supported her husband whether it was moving to Texas or running for president without asking her opinion. But she did have opinions of her own and expressed them as she could be it was wearing a pro-choice button at the 1980 Republican convention or working with AIDS charities when others in her party were turning away. #roll100

Tamra Wow, I wish more were so courageous now! 4mo
Megabooks @Tamra yes, and in her final interviews with the author before her death, she said she no longer considered herself a Republican because of the direction the Party was going under Trump. They asked many of the other people interviewed if HW or W would‘ve been president without her influence and the older generation said yes, HW would have, but Boomers and younger gave her the credit I (Xer) thinks she should have! 4mo

On top: page 39. On bottom: page 40. Literally the very next page.
Ugh. It may seem like a tiny thing. But inconsistencies like these bug the hell out of me. A good editor should have caught it and made text revisions.

The pleasure I get out of coming home from work and putting on my fleecy PJs and slippers is so intense it should probably come with a parental warning label.

The recently deceased wife of President George H. W. Bush and mother of President George W. Bush exemplifies an old-school style of feminine strength and influence in this warmhearted biography.

After Becoming by Michelle Obama wanted to read more about the First Ladies💕
