Temper
Temper | Layne Fargo
For fans of the high-stakes tension of the New York Times bestsellers Luckiest Girl Alive and The Lying Game, a razor-sharp page-turner about female ambition and what happens when fake violence draws real blood. After years of struggling in the Chicago theater scene, ambitious actress Kira Rascher finally lands the role of a lifetime. The catch? Starring in Temper means working with Malcolm Mercer, a mercurial director whos known for pushing his performers past their limitson stage and off. Kiras convinced she can handle Malcolm, but the theaters co-founder, Joanna Cuyler, is another story. Joanna sees Kira as a threatto her own thwarted artistic ambitions, her twisted relationship with Malcolm, and the shocking secret shes keeping about the upcoming production. But as opening night draws near, Kira and Joanna both start to realize that Malcolms dangerous extremes are nothing compared to what they're capable of themselves. An edgy, addictive, and fiendishly clever tale of ambition, deceit, and power, Temper is a timely, heart-in-your-throat psychological thriller that will leave you breathless.

The whole time I was listening to this, I kept wondering where it was going...I was ten minutes from the end, thinking WTF? These people have too much baggage for me to even care what happens to them...and yet I was still compelled to listen all the way to the end, maybe that was due to the perfectly performed narration, though. And while the ending was sort of satisfying...it may have been better if the Earth had opened up and swallowed them all.

I liked this. It's being called a potboiler and I definitely agree. Kira lands a part in a play called Temper. Joanna is running the theater company. Malcolm is the lead and the director. What will he do to get the best performance? It's kind of a slow burn but it sucks you in.

Awful book billed as a psychologically thriller. A sadistic theater director does the casting couch thing with his two leading ladies and puts them through the ringer. Well, until he gets his comeuppance all "Black Swan" style. Writing was amateur and filled with too many predictable cliches and mystery tropes. Skip this turkey.

Today's #read99women guest @katelizabee has a new book out in the world today: FOLLOW ME! And I'm equally eager to pick up this "slow-burning feminist thriller" she recommends. More here: http://www.greermacallister.com/blog/2020/2/19/read99women-kathleen-barber

• Received this #goodreads #giveaway back in the spring. This one came out July 2. Currently on page 45 and not liking it. It's either the fact I don't like the characters, or the drama world completely bores me (both are true) but I just don't have good luck with fiction ARCs 🤷‍♀️ Giving it a little bit longer (seriously, 25 more pages) and I'm bailing. Might anyone be interested in a #LitsyBookSwap? I know...way to sell it, right?! 😆 •

I don‘t remember how I heard about this one, but it‘s both not what I was expecting and completely on the tracks. I guessed the ending within seconds of starting it, but there is some decent tension throughout. More of a suspense than a thriller, but decent. If I didn‘t know exactly where it was going maybe I‘d have liked it more. But there are no surprises.

It feels like forever since I read a straight thriller. Can‘t wait to crawl into bed with this one.

Holy crap WOW. I don‘t even know what just happened but I loved it!! This book is a dark, psychological thrill ride and I just couldn‘t get off. I needed to know what these characters were thinking and what they were going to do next. Layne Fargo‘s writing is both edgy and utterly fascinating! Holy book hangover!! ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

It's a gorgeous day in NYC! Perfect for perusing the $1 carts at the Strand. Found a few gems, including this ARC of Temper that sounds really good. Not released until July so probably a bit of an oops that it ended up for sale 🤫 #bookhaul

ravenlee I don‘t think ARCs are for sale at all, so it must have been a slip-up. I have seen them for sale at an indie bookstore, but it was a special event for charity. I know used bookstores won‘t take them because they can‘t sell them. 5y
k.reads.5 The Signature of All Things is one of my all-time favorites! 5y
swishandflick @ravenlee yep, I know! That's why I was surprised to stumble on it in the used $1 section 😆 5y

I received this as an ARC from a Goodreads Giveaway for my honest opinion. I liked it. It was a slow burn. Two women's POV's during the rehearsals of a play called Temper. Short Chapters and an ending that was unreal

Got this arc in a little free library, it‘s hella menacing, all about the theatre community in Chicago so I‘m loving all the references to places I know!
