The Patriot Army was shaped and strengthened by the desperate circumstances of the Valley Forge winter. This is where Curzon the boy becomes Curzon the young man. I think older students will really enjoy reading this book along with “Chains.” They are interesting ways for them to learn about American history.

Pickpick

Forge is the solid, compelling second book of the Seeds of America series for middle grade readers. It follows the stories of Isabel and Curzon, two young slaves who seek freedom during the American war for independence.

I liked this book, but the shift of main character from the first book was a surprise that took time to get accustomed to. I learned a lot about slavery during this war, as well as the dire conditions for soldiers. Enjoyable.

“There were some eleven thousand soldiers at camp, making Valley Forge the third biggest city in America...”

I learned much more about the American Revolutionary War in this book, which is mostly set at Valley Forge, the camp of the American forces.

[DELETED] 3803335244 We read this. Admittedly I didn‘t like this book as much as Chains. 6y
Libby1 I agree, @ForeverNerdy , but I still liked it. Have you read Ashes yet? 6y
[DELETED] 3803335244 No we stopped at this one. By we I mean my son & I. He didn‘t want to go on & I was happy with stopping at the time. Have you read Ashes yet? 6y
Libby1 @ForeverNerdy - no, I haven‘t, but I will read on. It took me a little while to get used to Curzon being the focus of this book instead of Isabel. The story of his name... 😍 6y
