Stayed up far too late on a school night to finish this. A slow burn tragedy which is an indictment of the many forms of misogyny The book is really about the disposability of women. It may be fiction but it is grounded in all too bleak reality

EvieBee I love when good books keep you up on a school night! 2y

I don't know what I think or feel about this book.
It certainly kept me reading... I didn't feel.i was understanding some of the last quarter as it became very fluid in time and character. I'm.stoll uncertain as to all the underlying implications.
However, definitely very well written and thought out. Really intriguing plot twists and turns.

Another lockdown borrowed book...
A young girl, pregnant, comes to England Tom Ireland, searching for her lover. There appears to be some eeeriness and creepiness around an encounter with a stranger...

This short novel (213 pages) is 24 years old but I‘ve only just read it. William Trevor writes about casual cruelty and violence in a calm, understated, rueful style. I felt sympathy for the dull misery of Felicia‘s marginalized life before, during and at the end of her journey yet somehow detached from it. (Yes, that‘s part of the point.) The ending is great but I‘m not quite persuaded it was worth the journey to get there. A tentative pick.

#TooManyCreeps but a dark part of me looooves this kind of fiction - at least these three.

Cathythoughts Interesting, must look these up 👍🏻 6y
LeahBergen I‘ve read The Collector and Felicia‘s Journey ... I need to look up the other one! 6y
AshleyHoss820 Felicia‘s Journey! Yes! The Collector is sitting on my shelf, waiting, with a really creepy cover! 😊 6y

BarbaraBB @AshleyHoss820 It is even better, I think! 6y
AshleyHoss820 @BarbaraBB I‘m looking forward to it, if that‘s not too weird to say... My Dad, who used to be a prosecuting attorney & is now a judge, saw my copy of The Collector and said, “I just don‘t know where I went wrong...” Gee Dad...maybe you shouldn‘t have practiced opening statements out loud & kept all that true crime stuff in the house...😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 When I read it, I‘ll tag you so you can see it! 😊 6y
TrishB Loved The Collector! 6y
batsy So fascinating! Haven't read any. This is going to sound strange but nothing beats a good book about creepy places, people and things... 6y
Cinfhen My daughter LOVES to read creepy and disturbing books...I‘ve taken a screenshot for her 😉👍🏻 6y
BarbaraBB @batsy I agree. Another reason why I love Lolita as well! 6y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen Cool! She‘ll love them, I‘m sure. And tell her about the tagged book as well then 😘😉 6y
Cinfhen Thanks @BarbaraBB will do! 6y
ephemeralwaltz Loved the collector. Disturbing books are some of the best! I've been wanting to read 6y
BarbaraBB @ephemeralwaltz Thank! I‘ll check that one out. What is it with the butterflies: they are on the cover of The Collector and The End of Alice as well!! 6y
ephemeralwaltz @BarbaraBB ha! True! Very suggestive, I guess. 6y

William Trevor‘s 1994 Whitbread Award-winning novel Felicia‘s Journey smoulders with suspense. At its simplest, it‘s a cat-and-mouse story, but it considers a number of prickly social issues as well: homelessness, abortion, forgiveness, family duty, and the afterlife among them.

I found it riveting, and Mr Hildritch is one of the creepiest characters I‘ve recently read.

I really looked forward to this book and I did enjoy it, especially the character of Mr. Hilditch and the scenes about his being and thinking, eating and acting. Felicia herself I thought a bit flat.
The book did not meet my expectations, however. #1001books

How can one give a proper review on this with no spoilers? Suffice it to say, it's good and it's creepy. 45/1,001 #1001Books

vivastory I love your 1,001 project. 7y
AshleyHoss820 @vivastory Thank you! When I got the book 1,001 Books You Must Read Before You Die, I thought, "Challenge Accepted" like any good bookworm would do! ? (edited) 7y
vivastory @AshleyHoss820 haha. I've thought about doing it. There's a few in there I don't really have any interest in reading. I am trying to keep track of the ones I read. 7y

AshleyHoss820 I have definitely read a few books on the list and thought, "I actually could have died without ever having read that book..." for me, the list is a good way to expand my reading horizons. And to read those classics I always said I'd read and never got around to! ? (edited) 7y
vivastory @AshleyHoss820 There's a buddy read planned for Infinite Jest if you're interested. It starts February. 7y
AshleyHoss820 Oo! I may have to think about that! I've heard it's pretty challenging! Thanks for letting me know! 7y
vivastory @AshleyHoss820 We're tackling it in small sections-60 pages per week. So, it's going to take several months but I think it'll make it easier & we'll be able to unpack all the layers. @JenP is organizing it. 7y
AshleyHoss820 Thank you!! I think I'll join in! 7y

Published in the 1990's, but I didn't read it until last year. I love William Trevor's writing, and in my opinion, this is one of his best. Significant creep factor in this one. #publishedinthe1990s #photoadaynov16
