This nonfiction book is about Lillian Leitzel, the most famous woman in the world at the height of her aerial talent, and her almost but not quite as famous third husband Alfredo Cardona, a trapeze artist. They both were the star attractions for the Ringling Bros. Circus in the early 1900s, with back stories and lives so dramatic and tragic they almost seem fictional. The author did a good job telling their stories. The narrator was superb. ⬇️

Texreader I doubt I would have read (listened to) this book but for needing the #letterQ for #litsyatoz. I‘m so glad I did. There was so much to learn about circus life, life at the turn of the century, the glitz and glamour, and the impact of the Great Depression on the circus world. #blameitonlitsy 4y
Cinfhen I almost bought this from #BookOutlet #DangIt Do you think it would make for good bookclub discussion 4y
Texreader @Cinfhen Yes, I think there are a lot of discussion worthy topics in the book 4y

Made these cards while listening to the tagged book. I love audiocrafting. It‘s so rare when I can do this rather than audiocleaning the house.

When I picked this book for #litsyatoz #letterQ I had no idea it might work for #readingeurope2020. The parents of the “queen” were circus performers in the 1890s all over the Carpathian Mountains. So far, they‘ve covered #Romania #Czechoslovakia and #Poland.

#Mexico is also an important locale if you have an Americas reading goal.

I may count this one for #Romania but then I lose my excuse to reread The Historian. Tough choices. We will see...

Addison_Reads I read this last year and really enjoyed it. 4y
Texreader @Addison_Reads It‘s so fascinating and I love learning about this period in time. I‘m appalled about how Leitzel‘s mother had two kids because she was raped as a minor. It‘s horrible!! 4y

This is my pick for #LetterQ for #litsyatoz. I‘m reading Victim 2117 for #LetterV, and then I only need U and Z and I have those books lined up and ready to go too! I‘m so far ahead than I‘ve ever been for this challenge I do every year!

I had never heard of The Flying Codonas or Lillian Leitzel before this book. I've always been fascinated by the circus and its performers though, and this book only made me want to read more about circus performers.

This book has love, adventure, and heartbreak. Although areas are more speculative nonfiction, the book still has plenty of facts and details mixed in. I was immersed in the traveling circus world and enjoyed the journey.
