D-Day is approaching. They dont know where or when, but the Germans know itll be soon, and for Felicity Flick Clariet, the stakes have never been higher. A senior agent in the ranks of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) responsible for sabotage, Flick has survived to become one of Britains most effective operatives in Northern France. She knows that the Germans ability to thwart the Allied attack depends upon their lines of communications, and in the days before the invasion no target is of greater strategic importance than the largest telephone exchange in Europe. But when Flick and her Resistance-leader husband try a direct, head-on assault that goes horribly wrong, her world turns upside down. Her group destroyed, her husband missing, her superiors unsure of her, her own confidence badly shaken, she has one last chance at the target, but the challenge, once daunting, is now near impossible. The new plan requires an all-woman team, none of them professionals, to be assembled and trained within days. Code-named the Jackdaws, they will attempt to infiltrate the exchange under the noses of the Germans-but the Germans are waiting for them now and have plans of their own. There are secrets Flick does not know-secrets within the German ranks, secrets among her hastily recruited team, secrets among those she trusts the most. And as the hours tick down to the point of no return, most daunting of all, there are secrets within herself Filled with the powerful storytelling, unforgettable characters, and authentic detail that have become his hallmarks, Jackdaws is Ken Follett writing at the height of his powers.

Mehso-so

I spent most of the day glued to this book. Once they landed in France I was on the edge of my seat.

I writing was often distracting—not in a good way. I didn‘t appreciate how he described women, especially if he didn‘t think they were attractive.

Two of the group were lesbians and another was a cross-dresser—for no apparent reason. (Is this a guy thing?)

I want to learn more about the the real-life Jackdaws!

#lmpbc @Pogue @TheBookHippie

Maria514626 Trigger warning! There are torture scenes. They didn‘t give me nightmares but I didn‘t appreciate the mind pictures. Insinuations are creepier. (I think he was going for high creepiness.) (edited) 1y

I‘ve been pretty critical about the writing. Still, it‘s a good story and very suspenseful.

Its good to see an all-women crew, even though they‘re sometimes painted with sexist brush. (I wonder what this would have been like with a woman writer?) #girlpower

I am a snob about writing and soup. 😆 This is my first Follett book. I like the story but he uses too many words.

In this case, you know that the women have to sneak an injured, incapacitated man into Gilberte‘s apartment. “Unfortunately” is unnecessary. And, removing it makes the sentence more powerful.

Off soap box. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

This is our book club pick for the month, and I'm looking forward to talking about it. On one hand, the plot was lots of fun and I can see it making a great movie. Down with Nazis, and all that. 💪 🇬🇧 On the other, this book is really sexed up, and I dunno what it added to the story. And it's not like I'm a prude, I finished Bridgertons just like everyone else 🤔🤷🏻‍♀️
One square down for #bookspinbingo !

At first I wasn‘t sure about this Ken Follett Book, but it grew on me more and more and more as I carried on reading, and in the end loved the story and wanted to keep on reading. A Great War time story with some wonderful female lead characters, and what‘s more based on a true story. The lead character sounds like a great woman. I strongly recommend this book to Ken Follett fans, those who love wartime stories, & anyone who loves a great story.

EadieB Great story! Nice review! 5y

Follett is a powerful storyteller and this one does not disappoint. His characters are unforgettable and his plots are mixed with authentic detail of historical events. Just before D-day a group of courageous woman led by Felicity “Flick” Clairet from the Special Operations Executive sabotage German‘s lines of communications in northern France which was a vital part of the success of the D-day mission. Read about the secret mission of Jackdaws!

Follow.my.read This was an ALL TIME FAVORITE!!!!!! I love Follett!!! 5y
EadieB @Follow.my.read Definitely a good one! 5y

EadieB @Andrew65 I thought it was an excellent story. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Most definitely, and a very big story at that. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 I like how it was based on a true story. A woman named Pearl Witherington, a trained British courier, in charge of 2,000 men who was recommended for a Military Cross, which women were held ineligible. She received a civil MBE, which she returned, saying that she had done nothing civil. 5y

Reading Ken Follett and I‘m not ashamed at all! Why am I telling you this? A man wrote in GR that it‘s embarrassing/a guilty pleasure to read Follett. That‘s sad! Nothing to feel ashamed of! Then I remembered that people have been embarrassed to read for example Harry Potter (adult covers to hide it), 50 shades, Paulo Coelho.

Andrew65 What‘s embarrassing or a guilty pleasure about reading a brilliant author like Ken Follett. How stupid! @EadieB (edited) 5y
Andrew65 Hoping to start this tonight or tomorrow. 5y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 People are weird... 5y

Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Agreed, and quite snobbish about the books they read. Don‘t care how high brow or not an author is considered, more about if I enjoy the book, story, characters, etc. Read some of those authors that are considered high brow and some of those books are so boring and would switch me off reading. We read for enjoyment not to impress others. @EadieB (edited) 5y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 From now on I‘ll only listen to classical music and read Plato or Tsehov when I‘m out and about, so that everyone knows I‘m really smart 😂🤣😂🤣😜🤦‍♀️🤯 (edited) 5y

Oryx No such thing as a guilty read. Enjoy what you want. 5y

Tove_Reads @andrew65 When are you due back at work? 5y
Tove_Reads @oryx @wanderinglynn Absolutely! The most important thing is that you read. It beats all the ones not reading! 5y

It's a bit biased towards the "good guys". I would've liked more scenes with the gestapo officer in it. I'm not so sure about how much the book reflects on actual war situations back then.
I don't regret diving in tho,
