Bookish and proper Percival Tunstell finds himself out of his depth when floating cities, spirited plumbing, and soggy biscuits collide in this delightful conclusion to NYT bestselling author Gail Carriger's Custard Protocol series. Percival Tunstell loves that his sister and her best friend are building themselves a family of misfits aboard their airship, the Spotted Custard. Of course, he'd never admit that he belongs among them. He's always been on the outside - dispassionate, aloof, and hatless. But accidental spies, a trip to Japan, and one smart and beautiful doctor may have him renegotiating his whole philosophy on life. Except hats. He's done with hats. Thank you very much. This was a lot of fun. Like all custard protocol books there‘s a mission to find some rumored supernatural species and hijinks ensue. I was drawn to this one though because we finally get to see Percy shine. The bulk of the adventure deals with Percy and new doctor shipmate Arsenic. Percy is known for being socially inept so watching him flounder is certainly entertaining.

Cal and I have decided to take a break from Alex Verus and instead are going to finish off the Custard Protocol. I've been looking forward to the Percy story because he's so socially clueless I know things will be over the top and humorous.

Another Snow Day! Which is rare in Oklahoma. Normally it melts the next day. Today I finished my Parasolverse Reread. Reticence was just as delightful the 2nd time. #great2020parasolversedoover

This is by far my favorite book in the series. Percy is flawed, but his inner thoughts explain why he is the way he is without being boring and without making the story bog down. The doctor is a fun character and I really enjoyed their trip to Japan. The concept of a floating city for Giajin is really fun and the importance of love for immortals is flushed out. Percy is by far my favorite of the original crew and this is a fun adventure. 3.5/5

Loved this. Such a great end to the series. I wouldn‘t recommend starting the series here because it‘s the culmination of a whole lot of things - and it‘s also full of references to the Parasol Protectorate and the Finishing School series too. And because of that, it just did everything that I wanted it to.

AlaMich Does it bug you that they changed the size of the books partway through the series? That would aggravate me every time I looked at them! 4y
Verity @AlaMich it really does. Her publishing deal in the uk changed and there were no good options. I have one odd sized book in the previous series too and that drives me mad as well 4y

4/5⭐ Utterly delightful. There still wasn't any plot to speak of, but the characters made me laugh so much I didn't care.

At first I thought it forced and unnecessary to give every single main character a romantic partner, but Percy and Arsenic pair so well together I can't complain. I love them SO MUCH.

I‘ve always a soft spot for the bookish, cat loving, scientist Percy...so I‘m glad she created someone perfect him as well as great in her own right. My only complaint, I wanted more of them, a slower build up, and way more of some of the unique shifters introduced in this installment.

I‘m sorry to see this expanded world end, but I think she did a great job wrapping up a bunch of different storylines stretching across generations really.

The most recent in The Custard Protocol is shockingly and abysmally lazy. I am clearly a fan of Carriger‘s steampunk novels as a body, and this had none of the play or narrative development of earlier books. It is dry and formulaic, one‘s _desire_ to love the characters warring with the story as it is artlessly written. I regret my purchase, and wish I had discovered the disappointment as a library book.

These books never fail to make me laugh. They‘re just so much fun! I loved the end of this series, I think it wrapped it up pretty nicely. It was cool to see characters from the Parasole Protectorate and the Finishing School series included in the story.

It usually takes me a bit to get into these books, but I loved this one from the start. The epilogue made it seem like it might be the last in the series? I hope not. The writing, and especially the dialogue, is amazing. These books hit all my buttons.

This book is making me want to re-read all of Carriger‘s books. How many times is too many to read them??? Maybe chronological this time instead of publishing order?

josie281 I have this audiobook and was thinking i should do a reread. I‘ve read in publisher order only as well. 5y

I love cats. But alas my Mr. Darcy does not. From time to time I look at Rescue sites and dream of kitten like this one. I would name it Jane Pawsten. Until then I love Book Cats like Footnote: "Normally the chair was Footnote‘s but the cat ceded it to her on the understanding that she would compensate by providing her lap. Arsenic dutifully compensated." ?

JanuarieTimewalker13 You‘d be surprised how someone can change. I had an ex fiancé who was dead set against cats, but I lived alone and I got one and then he was the biggest mush with the cat ever. He evolved into a cat lover. Cats are underrated in the States. 5y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @JanuarieTimewalker13 I keep showing him pictures of my friends cat Chester Copperpot in attempt to where him down 5y

JanuarieTimewalker13 Haha...Chester Copperpot is an adorable name!! Believe me, you can convert him-my ex fiancé was “allergic”. Yeah, right. All of a sudden, he wasn‘t and that cat was all over him. Lol I would come home with a cat that fetches (pretty common now) and just say “this is a dog disguised as a cat, and he/she needed a home”. Lol 5y

Nothing makes my Bookworm heart happier than a series that ends well. Gail Carriger has woven a wonderful conclusion to Custard Protocol. It gave me Percy's story, charming new character Arsenic, and old favorites from Finishing School and Parasol Protectorate. My only complaint is that I wish Epilogue was about 50 pages longer. I just wanted to see so much more of these beloved characters. 😻
#great2019parasolversereadalong

Crinoline_Laphroaig Glad I did reread before release of this. It was great lead up and characters were fresh in my mind. 5y
catsuit_mango I did not do the complete readalong and now I want to re-read poison and protect because of you-know-who and figure out exactly what aunt softy did... As I had read the Protectorate before every else I did not know who to look for... Oh and Manifest, does she need her own story or what? 5y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @catsuit_mango definitely needs her own story. As well as Lord A. 5y

Mehso-so

It felt like it was too focused on wrapping up everyone‘s story, than giving Percy his own story, which was a bit of a disappointment. Plus, it all felt a bit rushed. Still, it was entertaining and easy. 3/5 ⭐️
