The A to Z of You and Me
The A to Z of You and Me | James Hannah
"Beautifully constructed and hugely moving. Deserves to be a smash hit."—Lissa Evans, author of Crooked Heart The A to Z game. For Ivo, it's a way to pass the time, a way to avoid the pain, and a way to think about what really got him here. His hospice nurse suggested it. Think of a body part for each letter, and think of memories connected to each one. And so begins the revealing of his misspent life: the terrible teenage choices, friendships made and cracked, love he'll never get back. He remembers the girl who tried to help him, the friend who wouldn't let her, and the sickness that chases him even now. Refreshing and thought-provoking, The A to Z of You and Me shows the raw unraveling of a life lived loud and hard. All our choices have consequences. But what happens after? A Target Book Club Pick! Went to the grand opening of a bookstore today for #independentbookstoreday. Was a little overwhelmed by the crowds so I ended up with just these things.
Peter Pan is my favorite Disney character, so when I saw this candle it was a done deal. And yes, it has a little crocodile gem in it 🥺

Why do I keep thinking this is YA? When it was on my shelf, I just kept assuming that for the longest time.

Jennick2004 The title kinda sounds that way 6y
Kaylamburson It looks like a YA book. I would have guessed that from the cover art and title! 6y
BookishGirl06 @Kaylamburson that was my reasoning too. 6y

This was a slow burn for me because at first the main character Ivo was basically unlikeable- loser friends, casual drugs, doesn't listen to nice girlfriend. Then as the story professed from his death bed you realize - the guy basically stopped growing ten years ago. And what if we all never got a chance to leave our 20's? Then I learned what happened & I ended up loving the book. Totally worth all the lead up! #mustread #literature

A great reminder to surround ourselves with, and to be "life livers". James Hannah's depiction of a man in hospice care is surprisingly, and heartbreakingly accurate. It has been tougher to read than i could have imagined, but at the same time I can't wait to read more.

Th A to Z of how to force a concept to fit a book that doesn't really work but the author says "Hey, why the hell not?" Sprinkle in some unlikeable characters, non-dramatic drama and BAM! You get this book.

I've heard of this concept before, but never put precisely this way.

Beckys_Books It's certainly true for tween girl sleep overs. Odd numbers are a mistake. 8y
Madeline And preschool play dates, in my experience! 8y

I'm having a tiny reading slump. I hope this helps!

Cinfhen Good Luck☘ wanted to like this one but Ivo just didn't do it for me 8y
ej0728 @Cinfhen I agree, wanted to like it but just couldn't get into it. 8y
Verity I read it last year and kinda liked it. I don't think it helped that I'd read Last Days of Rabbit Hayes relatively soon before which has similar themes but was much more my sort of book. 8y

Sitting outside after the rain listening to the bugs and tree frogs.... What a great way to start a new book and end a very long day!!!!

LovesToRead I tried to read the book, but there seemed to be such a disconnect between all the characters 8y

I REALLY wanted to love this book but for me...it lacked heart. It felt disjointed and flat. The snippets of memories didn't allow me to visual and connect to the whole story. Not terrible but not terrific either 😶MEH

Ivo is dying and he's trying to come to terms with all the mistakes and heartbreaks he's caused along the way. So far it's good, not great.

I liked this book. I wish we had learned more about the other characters in the novel - I felt like we had very little knowledge of anyone including the narrator. I didn't feel very connected to most characters.
