The Gun Seller
The Gun Seller | Hugh Laurie
11 posts | 28 read | 21 to read
British actor and comedian Hugh Laurie's first book is a spot-on spy spoof about hapless ex-soldier Thomas Lang, who is drawn unwittingly and unwillingly into the center of a dangerous James Bondlike plot of international terrorists, arms dealing, high-tech weapons, and CIA spooks. You may recall having seen Laurie in the English television series Jeeves and Wooster; Laurie played Bertie Wooster, the clutzy hero of the P.G. Wodehouse comic novels that originated those characters. The lineage from Wodehouse's Wooster to Laurie's Lang is clear, and, if you like Wodehouse, you'll probably love The Gun Seller.

Holy roller coaster, Batman! That was a wild ride. I can‘t remember which article I read about spy novels you‘ve never read, but they were absolutely right—it was a funny, raucous, joy of a read. It‘s not as much a spy novel as it‘s a spy novel sendup with a thesis centered on the massive global arms trade. I listened to the audiobook, but this is a book that I will need to have in my personal collection.

Good lord, this novel has a break-neck pace to it. It‘s the literary equivalent of a Porsche 718 Spyder full throttle on the Bundesautobahn. I‘m a little more than halfway through this spy novel send-up, and **sooo** much has happened. And I honestly have no idea how House MD is gonna write his MC out of the corner he‘s gotten himself in to.

House MD wrote a book? I. Am. All. The. Way. In.

CarolynM It‘s good, too🙂 6mo
Awk_Word_Smith @CarolynM I‘m only 6% into the book and I immediately like the MC/narrator. 6mo

I last read this in 2007, and rereading it now I remembered very little of the story. But this was a fun little thriller, definitely living up to the “James Bond meets P.G. Wodehouse” description I read somewhere.

Day 170.
Here I will note 365 books (or as many as I will have before I get tired) that have shaped my taste in literature. No explanations, no reviews. Just the cover of the book.
I do not challenge anyone. You are all welcome to take part.

Talking about the free little library some days before I just had to take a glimpse again today and look what I found. I loved Hugh Laurie as Wooster and Dr. House. 😍

julesG The book is pretty good. 6y

#FierceFeb #MeandaGun

This is as close to a gun as I want to get!

Cinfhen Where's @TrishB @arlenefinnigan @DeborahSmall do I need another lesson?!? 6y
batsy I love Wodehouse! I should give this a try 😊 6y
TrishB @Cinfhen lol 😁 I think Laurie went a bit more stateside with House? Although still quite British humour (whatever that may be!) 6y

CarolynM @Cinfhen @batsy @TrishB It's actually a well written, fairly serious thriller. 6y
arlenefinnigan @TrishB @DeborahSmall he'll always be the posho Bertie Wooster to us. We can't quite get our heads around House to be honest. 6y
TrishB @arlenefinnigan I don‘t do House either!! 6y
CarolynM @arlenefinnigan @TrishB @DeborahSmall I know what you mean, we taught our children (and the neighbour's children) to sing 47 Ginger Headed Sailors. But he's an extremely funny comedian (if you haven't seen A Bit of Fry and Laurie YouTube it now!), a good actor (Peter's Friends is my favourite for emotional range) and on the strength of this not a bad writer. 6y
DeborahSmall @trishB @arlenefinnigan Fry & Laurie are definitely among the best comedians. Especially in Blackadder 6y
TrishB @DeborahSmall @arlenefinnigan Blackadder 😂❤️ 6y
Cinfhen I knew the name looked familiar... HOUSE!!! Of course @TrishB (edited) 6y

#sizzlinsummerbooks Day 4: Red white blue. If you haven't read The Gun Seller (by Hugh Laurie of House fame) I highly recommend it. It's really funny and quirky. Happy 4th of July to my American friends!

BACKLIST BOOK REC: Yes, the author is *the* Hugh Laurie, Dr House himself! This book came out in 1996, before that role, and I don't know anyone else who has read it, which is a shame bc it's terrific! Spy thriller filled with action and literal LOL lines, fast paced and wicked funny.

Megabooks Crazy awesome! 8y
