The Man Who Invented Vegemite
The Man Who Invented Vegemite | Jamie Callister
6 posts | 1 to read
Today more than 22 million jars of Vegemite are sold each year, but when the salty black paste was first produced in 1923 the public wasn't interested. In fact, it took another fifteen years and a world war before we embraced it. The Man Who Invented Vegemite spans the Gold Rush, the Depression and two world wars and it opens a fascinating window both on the evolution of modern Australia and the quiet achievements, and tragedies, of one man. Jamie Callister sets out to learn more about the grandfather he never met and, along the way, discovers that extraordinary things can happen to (almost) ordinary people.

Things on my bookshelf that just make sense*

An American friend asked me about the lockdown in Metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire - and said that the word shire made her feel like watching LoTR (same) - anyway - it got me thinking about how I don‘t actually know much about Mitchell Shire so I googled - and well I ended up here : https://youtu.be/BPU3_aowSOk ... how‘s your day going?

CarolynM The Oarsome Foursome! 4y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @CarolynM, I had tears I laughed so much rewatching those ads. What legends! 4y
JanuarieTimewalker13 I watched the video, and one thing I need explaining is why I can never hear the English or Australian accents in song. I‘m guessing it‘s the same for you with American accents. I thought The Rolling Stones were American for about a quarter of my life. Lol I think I was in my teens when I heard them interviewed. (edited) 4y

thegirlwiththelibrarybag @JanuarieTimewalker13, hmm - yeah it‘s more of a universal accent when singing... not sure! 😅 that‘s a little bit funny! I can remember one side of my family struggling with Hugh Laurie not being American (in his House days) they were convinced he was having a nervous breakdown and was doing a british accent in interviews... (edited) 4y
JanuarieTimewalker13 Hahahaha!!! I love that!!! Yeah, he was amazing in House and I only learned way after the show started that he was British!! Great show! I haven‘t had TV since 2010 so I‘m out of the loop, unless I get a dvd from my library and do a series binge. I haven‘t done that in a long time!! 4y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @JanuarieTimewalker13, it took awhile to convince them tho 🙄 but it was funny after! Oh wow - that‘s awhile! Australian tv always used to be so far behind what was showing in America... Netflix has been a great leveller, in that respect. I go in and out of watching tv... at the moment I‘m enjoying series over movies (but I‘m also in a tiny apartment with no plans - so that might also have something to do with it!) 4y
JanuarieTimewalker13 Yeah, I just figure the library has DVDs and I still have a TV just for the DVD player. My library has a wonderful selection, but if I binge, I‘m not reading, and I‘d rather just read. Especially bc I own a lot of books. Cable is too expensive. And I have an analog TV so I don‘t think Netflix would work. Lol it‘s a relic, but no sense in getting a new one right now. I use my phone to watch things on Kanopy, which is also free from library (edited) 4y

#NoFemmeber #AmericanHorror

Vegemite, totally Australian, totally an acquired taste, and often will induce an #AmericanHorror when given it to eat 😬

CarolynM 😂😂😂 That's because they try eating it by the spoonful! 5y
Billypar I tried it once in 10th grade in my World Cultures class. I did have that reaction, lol- maybe because of what @CarolynM mentioned though! 😂 5y
Tashreads 😂😂😂 5y

julesG @CarolynM @Billypar - Lesson one when approaching Marmite and/or Vegemite: Do not use a spoon! My introduction to ~mite was warm toast with butter and a "sigh" of ~mite on top. ? My son though, he dug into the jar with his toddler fingers. 5y
Cinfhen Hahaha ~ I heard it‘s gross 😖😣 5y
BarbaraBB Is it like the English marmite? I tried that once 😱 5y
erzascarletbookgasm What @BarbaraBB asked ☝️. Our family like Marmite and Bovril 😋, is Vegemite anything like that? 5y
BooknerdsLife @erzascarletbookgasm it's very similar. Salty with similar taste. 5y
BooknerdsLife I didn't like Vegemite at first while my daughter loves it (kids here eat it since they were little at kindergarten)...But I did grow to like it. The trick is to eat it with buttered toast and only spread a thin layer of it. 5y
erzascarletbookgasm Ah thanks, @BooknerdsLife . I think I‘ll like it then. 😊 We eat Marmite and Bovril with toast (not buttered!) and put them in porridge and oats. Yum! 5y
BooknerdsLife @erzascarletbookgasm Ah... I remember eating Bovril with porridge when I was little and loved it too 😍 Didn't know you eat them on toast without butter tho! 😲 5y
britt_brooke 😆 I like it, but a little goes a long way! 5y
JennyM @julesG so true!! 🤣 5y
CarolynM @julesg You got it🙂 5y
Billypar @julesG I'm just really loving the phrase "a sigh of -mite" If you ever write a book, you should work that in! 5y
julesG @Billypar Thanks. I'll keep it in mind. 😉 5y

My Australian friends may say that vegemite is better than #nutella but I say nay nay!

GarthRanzz John Pinette. Such a funny man taken far too soon. RIP 6y
Susanita @GarthRanzz We saw him many years ago at a local comedy club. He was so funny! Afterwards he signed CDs and was very gracious. 6y

I genuinely didn‘t notice the spelling error until after I posted it on Instagram.

I had a vegemite and cheese roll for lunch today and it was GLORIOUS! I forgot to bring a book tho 😧

Tamra What does it taste like? Don‘t tell me “chicken.” 😂😂😂 I‘ve never tried it. 6y
Lizpixie It's salty and yeasty and almost beefy. To be honest, you really have to taste it yourself. It's extremely hard to describe!🇦🇺 6y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Tamra, I'm a long time vegetarian so chicken would never have been my answer! It's made from brewers yeast with various vegetable and spice additives. It can be a bit of an acquired taste. I always recommend trying it in small amounts (a thin scraping to begin with) and with avocado. https://youtu.be/P_sUhTWtvG4 (edited) 6y

Tamra @thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Lizpixie I am going to have to try it. I love salty! 6y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Tamra - well, report back! What part of the world are you from? Have you tried Marmite? 6y
Tamra @thegirlwiththelibrarybag no, that‘s why I asked. I hear about it though. In America - Minnesota. It‘s snowing right now. Are you in Australia? If so, you are probably gearing up for “summer.” (edited) 6y
CarolynM Yum! 6y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Tamra, marmite isn‘t the same as vegemite ☺️ snowing sounds lovely! It‘s spring at the moment, Melbourne (Australia) gets very excited about the Spring Racing Carnival - we even have a public holiday for the main horse race! And then, yes, into summer! 6y
Tamra @thegirlwiththelibrarybag 😂😂 Now I am really confused AND intrigued! What is the difference? 6y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Tamra, Vegemite is 🇦🇺 and Marmite is 🇬🇧 (I think it might have a slightly sweeter taste but it‘s been so long since I had it that I don‘t really remember) 6y
Tamra @thegirlwiththelibrarybag ahhhh, I need to try both. 6y
Lizpixie @Tamra oh don't do the Marmite! *shudder* That stuff is awful. 6y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Lizpixie, is it really that bad? @Tamra, all this marmite talk is making me want to track some down! (Or at least make myself a vegemite and cheese sandwich) 6y
Lizpixie @thegirlwiththelibrarybag oh yes it is. When I was a kid, my best friends mum only bought marmite and I had to eat it if I stayed over. Now that stuff really does taste like tar! 6y
Lizpixie @thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Tamra all this talk of vegemite made me hungry so I'm now eating a midnight snack of saladas and saos with vegemite. Nom nom nom🤤 6y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Lizpixie, what are saos? But 👏 for vegemite at midnight! 6y
Lizpixie @thegirlwiththelibrarybag Don't they have Arnotts Sao biscuits in Melbourne? 6y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Lizpixie, I‘m not much for dry biscuits - I‘ll have a look in Coles next time I‘m there! 6y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Lizpixie, found them on the bottom shelf! They're square! I have had them before but didn't know what they were called! 6y
