I read Nikita‘s “Your Soul is a River” years ago, and I picked up this collection after enjoying Nikita‘s words greatly. “Your Heart is the Sea” is a heart-wrenching book of poetry that focuses on overcoming our demons, trauma, abusers, and reminds us of our worth and healing. I‘m very glad to have this book in my collection and look forward to Nikita Gill‘s future works.

so-soThis collection is very heavy. It‘s about abuse and rape, recovery and rebuilding. Maybe it‘s just not a collection to read in the middle of COVID 19, but it just felt like it was weighing itself down in places.
I have my issues with this collection. It seems, in a way, I fell out of love with Gill‘s poetry with this collection.

I think anything that tells women to not be quiet is a good thing. Maybe that‘s just me.

The original poem that got me interested in her was about ancestors. I still haven‘t seen that poem in her own books, though.

I find myself having a hard time with this book now. I just sort of want to be done with it. I‘m not finding as many poems that resonate with me now. I think I‘m going to have to take a Nikita Gill break after I‘m done with this book.

This drives me 🤬 crazy!!! 🙄 It‘s annoying and clueless. This is very nearly a deal breaker (as in I‘m done with the book and the author) for me. I like her so much, it‘s making me just skip this poem, but if I see it again, I‘m out. HISTORY IS NOT A GENDERED TERM!!! Using “herstory” hurts female historians. STOP IT!!!

I have always loved the water: lakes, rivers, streams, the ocean (@thebookhippie 😉). I always kind of thought it was an ingrained thing from my ancestors and their traditions about water sources, but this could very well be an equal part of it.

This is SO very important. “Just get over it. I did.” is in no way helpful. “Just get over it the way I did” is equally unhelpful. We‘re all different and we all have to take our own path to being okay.

I think this also applies to people who hear about what‘s been done to you. No one gets to judge how you deal with what‘s happened to you or how you express that. Period. There is not just one right way to do it.

panThis just wasn‘t the book for me. It has super high ratings on GR, but I suspect I‘m not her true audience. I thought the poetry was simplistic and only just average. Her pain is real, and I acknowledge that. But these don‘t have the gravity the situation deserves.
Much prefer Rupi Kuar, but really I‘m not an Intstagram poetry fan.

My laps are done. Now I‘m waiting for the “outside pool” to open so I can get some sun on these frighteningly white legs. That‘s my sunscreen and hat poking out of my bag! I didn‘t want to bring my hardcover read, and this ARC seemed like a good alternative.
Happy to see this #bookmail in my stack this morning. I wasn‘t a huge fan of her fairytales book, but I like the parts of this she‘s quoted on IG. So, count me in.
Now I need to designate the next three weeks as ARC weeks. I‘m SO behind!
