The Last King of Scotland
The Last King of Scotland | Giles Foden
6 posts | 5 read | 10 to read
What would it be like to become Idi Amin's personal physician? Giles Foden's bestselling thriller is the story of a young Scottish doctor drawn into the heart of the Ugandan dictator's surreal and brutal regime. Privy to Amin's thoughts and ambitions, he is both fascinated and appalled. As Uganda plunges into civil chaos he realises action is imperative - but which way should he jump?

A very powerful and impactful book, providing an insight into the times of Idi Amin; as well as the story of a man who got out of his depth and was lucky to get out of it with his life, Not seen the film but definitely want to after reading this. Covers #Uganda for #ReadingAfrica2022

“I will dig out a hammer and nails from among Eamonn‘s tools and do it.”
Excellent book and an interesting view of the politics and war in Uganda at the time. Definitely made me want to see the film. Found my heart beating fast at moments. The voice of this novel really drew me in. 4 out of 5 on GR. On loan from manager at work.

#MarchIntoOz Day 8: A Scottish medical doctor becomes the personal physician of a Dictator Emperor in Uganda and while he may not necessarily claim that #ItsALongWayToTheTop, being privy to the medical needs of an autocrat/tyrant should provide some remarkable insights on what it means to be there on top, to be so feared and abhorred at the same time. A #BigBadWolf find.

Tamra Such a phenomenal acting - scary! 6y

This was such a powerful book! What's so crazy is that even the most evil of dictators have likable qualities that brought them into power. Sometimes they even have a cozy home life and the inane ability to separate heinous acts from themselves. That was the case with Idi Amin. Such a powerful, gripping novel, told from the perspective of his Scottish personal physician. #KingOfTheWorld #Characters2017

#ReadJanuary Day 18 - #Royals

Two of the most bonkers "royals" on my shelves are Idi Amin and Lilliet Berne ?
