Mary Wollstonecraft's A Vindication of the Rights of Woman
Mary Wollstonecraft's A Vindication of the Rights of Woman: And, The Wrongs of Woman, Or, Maria | Mary Wollstonecraft
5 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
From Longman's Cultural Editions series, Wollstonecraft, edited by Anne K. Mellor and Noelle Chao, for the first time pairs Wollstonecraft's feminist tract, the first in English letters, A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, with her unfinished novel, The Wrongs of Woman, or Maria. By putting tract and novel together, this text presents a far richer and more complex discussion of Wollstonecraft's political and literary opinions. A wealth of cultural contexts bearing on the wrongs of woman (their social and political oppression) in the 18th century and on the development of the Gothic and realist novel further clarify these two texts. Handsomely produced and affordably priced, the Longman Cultural Editions series presents classic works in provocative and illuminating contexts-cultural, critical, and literary. Each Cultural Edition consists of the complete text of an important literary work, reliably edited, headed by an inviting introduction, and supplemented by helpful annotations; a table of dates to track its composition, publication, and public reception in relation to biographical, cultural and historical events; and a guide for further inquiry and study.

The breadth and depth of this women‘s knowledge-of philosophy, literature, poetry, the Bible, social & political issues past and present, awes me. Her writing style of beautifully structured sentences, use of allusions, use of capital letters to emphasize certain words,(seems to be a pattern of words that men use to describe the desired woman:AMIABLE, NEAT, FLIRT, etc),command of vocabulary,

kspenmoll Her erudite presentation of both sides of the arguments she is responding to, her persuasive talent...I could go on and on. I learned so much from this book, about so many in each field that she alluded to, argued against, argued for. To me she is extraordinary, her dedication, & conviction that women are equals to men, that their education, influenced by social attitude and mores of the time, governments/men/laws that see women as legal property (edited) 4y
kspenmoll Of their father, then their husband, subjugates them.Given that she wrote this in 1792, influences from both the American and French Revolutions informed her thinking.(Our forefathers did not “Remember the ladies” as Abigail Adams petitioned her husband John.)Wollstonecraft‘s work & ideas remain relevant today. I am sad to think she might be surprised that women are still struggling for equal rights in this world, some 200+ years later. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (edited) 4y

🌺 Cleaning my porch, getting furniture etc. out of storage to set it up.
🌺 I always have tested right in the middle. My theory is that I was naturally an introvert, but growing up with 7 siblings I had to be extroverted to survive. I always need to recharge- my bed was my oasis in a room I shared with 2 other sisters.
🌺 my favorite so far is the tagged book.Utterly amazed at The breadth & depth of her knowledge.
