Dont miss one of the most heartwarming young adult novels of the year. Perfect for fans of Water for Elephants, Wonder and All the Bright Places, When Elephants Fly shows that how we choose to live our lives matters, and that there are some battles worth fighting even if it means losing yourself. T. Lily Decker is a high school senior with a twelve-year plan: avoid stress, drugs, alcohol and boyfriends, and take regular psych quizzes administered by her best friend, Sawyer, to make sure shes not developing schizophrenia. Genetics are not on Lilys side. When she was seven, her mother, who had paranoid schizophrenia, tried to kill her. And a secret has revealed that Lilys odds are even worse than she thought. Still, theres a chance to avoid triggering the mental health condition, if Lily can live a careful life from ages eighteen to thirty, when schizophrenia most commonly manifests. But when a newspaper internship results in Lily witnessing a mother elephant try to kill her three-week-old calf, Swifty, Lily cant abandon the story or the calf. With Swifty in danger of dying from grief, Lily must choose whether to risk everything, including her sanity and a first love, on a desperate road trip to save the calfs life, perhaps finding her own version of freedom along the way.

TW: mental illness, suicide, animal abuse

T. Lily Decker lives in fear of developing schizophrenia, a mental illness that runs in her family. An internship at a newspaper brings her to a local zoo where she bonds with a baby elephant she nicknames Swifty. When the mother elephant rejects Swifty, Lily ends up on an adventure that will change her life.

Save it for when you need a good cry, because it‘s a five alarm snot-bomb.

Decent teen fiction about Lily, an 18 year old girl concerned about her potential future with mental illness, and her efforts to save a baby elephant. My only wish is that they would have left the romantic side story out -- didn't need it at all. #24in48

This book was great. I didn't expect to like it so much! It was beautiful but heartbreaking. I'm not much of a contemporary reader but I Love elephants, and like the main character, my mom is schizophrenic. Certain parts hit closer to home than I was prepared for.
ALSO including pictures of my daughter because tomorrow is her 14th birthday! 😊🎁♥️🎉🎈

My #shelfie is pretty pathetic for @bookriot 's #riotgrams, but here it is. I hate where my books are right now. 😩When we move, I promise it'll be better. 💔
