Pig Island
Pig Island | Mo Hayder

The acclaimed author of The Devil of Nanking returns with a riveting, disturbing thriller of religious fanatics, hoax debunkers, and the dark side of belief. Journalist Joe Oakes makes a living exposing supernatural hoaxes, but when he visits a secretive religious community on a remote Scottish island, everything he thought he knew is overturned. On the trial of a strange creature caught briefly on film, so deformed it can hardly be human, Oakes crosses a border of electrical fencing, toxin-filled oil drums, and pigs skulls to infiltrate the territory of the groups isolated founder, Malachi Dove. Their confrontation, and its violent aftermath, is so catastrophic that it forces Oakes to question the nature of eviland whether he might be responsible for the heinous crime about to unfold. Startling and uncompromising, Pig Island confirms Mo Hayder as one of the most talented, compelling thriller writers now working.

The beginning of the book was awesome! It was so creepy & scary and I loved it. I liked the darkness in this book and I wanted to continue reading even though this was quite slow.

This was unbelievable predictable and that was a big disappointment. Well there was a tiny turn of events that I hadn't guessed but everything went like I thought in the big picture. I still liked the ending scene.

Librarybelle Definitely sounds like a so-so read! 2y

Finally finished Pig Island. A quite different story with some positive features. Just found it a tad disappointing after the other books I read from her which I loved. Like something a bit different and strange. This may well be the book for you, but I can only give it a so so.

10th book finished for #JumpStart2022

Lizpixie Sounds exceedingly strange🤔 2y

Clwojick Woohoo!!! I agree! I always start off awesome then kind of slow down in the middle of the year, and then pick back up in pace again in September (edited) 2y
Andrew65 @Clwojick June / July always tails off in my reading due to tiredness towards the end of the school year and writing 400 reports. 2y

The next book in our #ChristmasBuddyReadathon starts today, all welcome to join, reading at your own pace. Buckle up as this one is termed ‘terrifying‘.

Tove_Reads Skipping this one. I‘ve decided it‘s time to focus solely on books I want to read, and I will also work hard on bailing books if I don‘t like them after 50 pages. I‘m not good at this, but I‘ll try. 2y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads It‘s very flexible and set up so people can choose which of the books they want to read. Good luck with the bailing after 50 pages. I‘m awful at that. 2y
EadieB @Tove_Reads @Andrew65 This is a good book to bail on! Good writing but dark and disturbing! 2y

Journalist Joe Oakes goes to Craignish, a remote Scottish Island, to visit a secretive religious community where a strange creature is caught briefly on film. What he discoverers forces him to question the nature of evil. This is a very dark and disturbing thriller and not for the feign of heart. I have read all of her Jake Caffery series and thoroughly enjoyed them. I was sad to hear of her death this year as she will be greatly missed for sure.

EadieB If you wish to read this book, be sure to heed my warning of gore, harsh language, supernatural and paranormal happenings. (edited) 2y
Crazeedi Never heard of this author. The setting sounds intriguing, but I'm not up for gore etc at least not now 2y

EadieB @Crazeedi She is an excellent writer but this one was too dark and awful happenings that I didn‘t particularly care for either. The Jack Caffery series is very good. (edited) 2y
Andrew65 Does sound a bit! 2y
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! 2y
MrT This is her one that freaked me out the most, even more so than The Treatment. I‘m sad we won‘t get any more Jack. 2y
EadieB @MrT I agree! She was too young and too talented to die so soon! 2y

Pickpick

A thrilling mystery mixed with a dash of horror? At first I wasn't sure, but my opinion quickly changed to, "Yes, please!" As always, Mo Hayder is brutal, pushes the boundaries, & even made me look away from the pages in disgust once. I stayed up late several nights reading this book at supersonic speed, & the ending did not disappoint. Read closely, & you'll even catch a pinch of the supernatural at the very end, making the climax even better!
